The Thing is called a Bolotomus. It's a creation of a friend of mine, Tom Wham (TomWham.com), from a vintage boardgame called "Snit's Revenge".

After TSR published the game, Tom and friends made a few Plush toy versions, and this is one such. I got it at the Dungeon Hobby Shop in Lake Geneva, circa 1980-81. Most plush bolotomi are stuffed; this one (named Charley) isn't, nor is his brother Fred, who is a more reddish-brown color than orange. (Their names come from another period piece, a cartoon in Dragon magazine... anybody remember?)
