What's your all time best RPG reference?

There is one book that I use in just about every game I run, especially having gone to systemless type of game play. The AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide by E. Gary Gygax still holds rank. I have gone through 3 or 4 of them over time, because they get worn out, abused and eventually break down.

This book still holds surprises for me after 20+ years of use. From the d20 insanity tables, the detail on creation of magic items and holy water, the random city/town encounter tables, rates o... Read More

DM Design

Well I'm going to try out a little project on here.  I'm running Deadlands for the first time as a "Marshal" or "GM".  Anyway I wanted to give you a look at my method of writing an adventure.  Not that you probaly care about "my" specific way of writing an adventure, but its kinda cool to see how different DMs do things in general I think.

It's on September 19th, and it's Wizards planned release party for the Dungeon Master's Guide 2 for 4th Edition. I'm not sure what to expect for the upcoming guide, I really want to see some more of what they started with and some new mechanics. stuff that would be nice include, vehicle combat (land/see/air), more traps, revised skill challenge section (I feel these things are still flimsy and broken to some level), methods of creation (your own weapons, classes and spells/skills) and some more...    We are in a second generation character campaign on our Friday game. D&D 3.5 Forgotten Realms. A couple of weeks ago our Dm infiltrated a Dwarven kingdom with Adamantine armored Trolls. The Armor gave some protection from fire. Our PCs were spending some time with the Dwarves to "learn" of their culture. (Long story there) Of course we got into the awesome fight that insued, and helped to dispatch the Trolls.

The Dwarves collected all the adamantine armor,... Read More

XP...Dient

When I was a young Dm I went through the "Monte Hall" stage where I would give out magic items and weapons like candy on Halloween. It always came back to bite me on the buttocks. Fortunatly I've grown out of that phase. One thing that I've noticed with all the "upgraded" games is that the XP award tables seemed to have expanded as well. Now the PC's can hack and slash their way through level after level and ruin the enjoyment for the Dm to keep them challenged. That is if you follow blindly... Read More
