When I heard a while back that Dragon and Dungeon magazine were going online, a bit of me died. Granted, I hadn’t ready either of the two publications in a while (3.5, d20, etc never managed to take hold with me), but it was nice to know that they was still some gaming mags actually being published on paper. I like being able to hold a tangible product in my hands, flipping through the pages, and so on. I mean, can understand the shift; e-zines & online magazines cost less to produce and are accessible by a much wider audience, so it makes sense.
My favorite gaming mag was Shadis. I found several copies at the local Half Price Books for 25 cents and figured what the hell. As soon as I opened them up I was hooked; the goofy KOTD strips, the cool obscure game reviews (keep in mind, this was well before the days when you could just google ‘indie rpg’), and the fact that you could tell the people involved were doing the mag because they really wanted to contribute to the community. Unfortunately, after 50 or so issues, Shadis went ‘on hiatus’ and has been that way for a decade. The only thing less likely then going off hiatus would be someone starting up a print zine.
Speaking of which, what online rpg zines are people reading these days? Or does everybody just carouse the columns section on RPG.net?
