Cartoon Action Hour: Season 2. So what to run?

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. There are plenty of shows to take a theme from that’s for sure. My list below is far from complete.

Masters of the Universe (or She Ra for the ladies out there)
Bravestarr
The Real Ghostbusters (or the Filmation Ghostbusters based on the original live action kid's show. While a huge Filmation Fan this show didn't do much for me except fill the gap between two I wanted to watch)
M.A.S.K.
Bionic 6
Transformers (or Gobots if you must)
Mighty Orbots

GI Joe
Inhumanoids
Robotix
Thundarr the Barbarian
The Herculoids
Battle of the Planets

But also finding players will be a challenge I think. Not because the people I know aren’t good role-players. But because the theme may be considered childish or because of the more looser game mechanics. This game isn’t on the same level as say Amber: The Diceless RPG, but it is more about staying in the theme of an 80’s syndicated cartoon. The mechanics are there but storytelling is the final decider of your outcome. In a way it’s more demanding of the player’s roleplaying skills. And that may be the deal buster for some of my players.

Something else that popped into my head is avoiding giving or letting my player group having the "Blazing Sword" solution for every mission. While I like the show Voltron and Battle of the Planets. It begs the question, if you have this wonderful end-all way of defeating any enemy why not use that right off the bat? I know, then you end up with 5 minute episodes where the heroes form the Fiery Phoenix or Blazing Sword and that just gets dull.

Well that's all I can think of for the moment. Hopefully my typing makes sense cause my cold is trying to kill me.

So now I'm scouring the net for background information, episodes and other-such to make my decision.

Hey there, Cyborg Trucker! Sorry I'm late to the party. I've just been busting my tail to ensure that CAH:S2 gets done in time for the October 30th release of the PDF. So far, so good.

Anyway, my vote would be Thundarr the Barbarian, of course. It's easily my favorite cartoon of all time, as I dig the moody settings and enjoy watching for the clever symbolism hidden throughout the episodes.

As for ways to keep players from using the "big nasty weapon" right away, you have some options. The best option, of course, is to talk to your players about the spirit of the retro-toon genre and discuss how these big weapons seldom come into the fray until the endgame. Hopefully, they'll be in tune enough with the genre that they'll simply follow suit. Another option is to require that such Traits (i.e., Traits representing these big weapons) have the "Disadvantage (Can only be used in the third act of an episode)" Restriction. Similarly, you can limit it with other Restrictions such as "Situational Setback" that can give it a negative modifier when used in the first two acts of an episode. All this is stuff found in CAH:S2.

Just some ideas.

I'm thinking the Flash Gordon cartoon series.

"Look they repaired our rocket, Flash!" says Zarkov.

"Again???" say Rocky.

That was always the question. Why go through 21 minutes of angst fighting with firebreath, rockets, ineffectual lasers when you *know* only the ultimate weapon is going to finish the story. Heck, even Power Rangers *STILL* uses this formula and their on their bazillionth series run.

Although now that you bring this to light, CT, it appears that plot device is engrained in Japanese cartoon entertainment.

Lords of Light, Thundarr generally came up with different form of gratuitous destrution every episode to solve his problems.
