Life as a Red Shirt
by BLAMM67

I have a new respect for law officers of all kinds. I spent the weekend as Daytime Security Supervisor at Another Anime Con. Overall I have to say it went pretty well. There were a few incidents that you would expect when you get a large group of people together. Plus there were a couple of bored colledge students who thought it would be fun to harrass who they no doubt saw as a bunch of wierdos intruding in their space. But these, while annoying were relatively easy to deal with. What was tough was the almost constant activity. There was never a really serious incident, but there could have been at any time. My job was to stay on my toes, keep my staff on their toes, and be ready for that big problem that might be just around the corner. I probably walked fifteen miles or more this weekend, the majority of it in one hallway. By the end, my feet were worn down to nubs, and I was limping noticably while trying not to aggravate the blisters I had built up. I wasn't the only one, either.

Now that it's over I can look back on it and I think it went rather well. I learned quite a bit from the experience, and I can apply it to the next time. Yes, despite the blisters and the lack of sleep, I think I can actually look forward it. And the next time I see someone walking a beat, be it police officer or mall-security, I'll give him or her a nod of appreciation. I've had a glimpse of what they do on a daily basis. It's a tough job, it has to be done, and they get little thanks for it.

I must agree with Carl.  You and your guys were terrific.  I have a lot of respect for the guys & gals on your staff.  I saw many of them constantly at one post or another.  I noted that many of them were on mostly all day every day, and that's a tough thing.

I felt that I had a tough role, but I atleast got to move around a bit, and change the scenery.  Granted, sometimes that wasn't my choice.  And i'm so glad I decided to say hell with my pride and actually use the walking stick.  Makes me wonder if there will be more next year?  ;P

Such jobs are thankless... the worst thing is trying to stay alert despite the boredom that sets in.  I had to serve as a Security Forces Augmentee a few times while I was in the service.  The first couple times were the worst as I was a noob.  I think the worst thing was being driven out to a point on the flight line and being dropped off with a M-16 and an orange cone and told to check the ID's of everyone going past.  This is in the middle of the night in Oklahoma during the fall.  With no shelter or cover the wind can really blow across the flightline and freeze you quickly (I only had my issued field jacket and was never issued a liner for it).  Luckily about half way through my shift one of the AWACS commanders saw me out there and brought out a mobile guard shack and heater for me.  I'll never forget that... when the regular Security Forces guys eventually came out to check on me they were a bit flustered that someone from another squadron had done this.  I think they were a little jealous.

Yup, that's exactly what I meant too. I only had to deal with some teens and preteens hyped up on cosplay and Mountain Dew. There are much worse things in the world than having to keep the hallways clear.

It is not an easy job at all.

I worked uniformed security for years, before I got myself into some good work, and in some of the least desirable roles. I was a mall cop for a very troubled mall for almost two years and in that time did everything from emergency response, to breaking up fights to stand-offs with tresspassed and very angry groups of miscreants. Heck, I even had a multiple officer bicycles chase through a crowded parking lot in the middle of summer. It sucked, but it was fun at times.

I also worked in a uniformed capacity for an upscale residential company in a downtown area on the swing and graveyard shifts. Nothing is more fun than finding yourself in a uniform, wearing a tin badge in theh eart of the city after it shuts down. Drunks, drugs, crazies and that was just some of our residents. I was required to hoof it everywhere to get from property to property in an area that ranged several city blocks. I even found a resident dead in their home on that job. At least on that job, I was paid a good wage and had a benefits plan. Most security workers, are lucky to get minimum wage and never see a benefit.

Security jobs suck, but somebody does have to do it. Also, an auto theft, apartment prowl or fight is more likely to be stopped by a security guard than any cop any day. If you really want to be cool, be nice to your local guard. He probably takes his job a lot more seriously than you think and a cup of hot coffee, a friendly word and the occasional doughnut can go miles to make the job a little more tolerable.
