Originally I wanted to write a blog post about old school games and what fond memories I have of them. Then instead, I started a pbp game over on the forums here.
Shameless plug time:Other Strangeness
My first rpg type game was Car Wars. But I never really played it, and certainly it wasn't a "role-playing" experience. We just built cars and sort of battled them, without any real understanding of the rules. Bigger guns = win. Then I found TMNT & Other Strangeness.
Of course I was already a huge TMNT fan, but the game blew me away. Not the mechanics so much, but the whole idea of creating all these cool characters. The BIO-E and mutant animal system I still think is great (Eric Wujcik tribute :D). Anyway, I played TMNT for years, but I was pretty young and running the games was never really as satisfying as I'd hoped.
So enter the age of Play By Post. I really want to give TMNT a good shot here! In the last two years or so, I've had some really good play by post games. Better in fact than all but one of my table top experiences. I hope that getting some nostalgia in the mix will make for a great game. Take a gander at the link above for more about the game itself.
What about D&D? I can't help but feel a little bit odd having barely played any D&D games. Back in the day - late 80s I guess - I do remember going to Fred Myers and picking up a red D&D box set. Basic, I think. And that's the only D&D I've ever owned!
Okay, sorry for the shameless plug. Any fond memories of old game systems? Remember the smell of the old books? I've got some with duct-tape repaired bindings from my MacGyver phase...
Ramble ramble 2am... ramble...
EDIT: Thanks to Calico_Jack73, Mitchbrock, & Killer DM for the old book smell!
