Wizkids future??

Announcement (from the Wizkids webpage)

The Topps Company announced today that it will close WizKids and discontinue its product lines for the immediate future. WizKids has been Topps’ core hobby gaming business based in Seattle, Washington.

Scott Silverstein, CEO of Topps, said “This was an extremely difficult decision. But in light of the current economic conditions, we feel it is necessary to align our gaming initiatives more closely with Topps current sports and entertainment offerings which are already being developed within our New York office.”

Upon notifying our partners, Topps will immediately pursue strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without noticeable disruption. To that end, WizKids will continue supporting Buy it By the Brick redemption for Arkham Asylum, and the December Organized Play events for HeroClix.

This makes me sad.  I have the great Cthulhu clix action figure displayed on my mantle.  I loved working with the Wizkid envoy team that came to TotalCon last year and I liked the horror themed events.  I hope the "strategic alternatives" come through.

Yeah, I'm pretty sad in general because I have seen a few local shops close recently, now some companies are struggling.  I hope things improve soon!

Wow!

That is too bad.  I am not into it, but it seems like a very popular line.  We were just talking about this around the game table recently.

I hope that the torch gets passed!

Whew... I am so glad to see that Classic Battletech (the only true Battletech IMHO) and Shadowrun will continue to be produced.

Quality or no, I know that many people, including my wife and oldest daughter very much enjoy the HeroClix game and figs. I do not play their games, but I do hope that the game finds a new home, though the size of the licenses involved makes that hard to see happening.

I'm not sure how to take this. In one way I am glad because the quality of the Hero Clix was always so poor. On the other hand it was my source for super hero minis.....

Oh Snap!  WizKids has the Battletech license.  I wonder if anyone is going to buy it from them.  I certainly hope so... IMHO Battletech is a piece of gaming history.  One of the most detailed Sci-Fi roleplaying settings I've ever had the pleasure of playing.  Though most people stuck to games involving Mechs I played in a couple that had nothing to do with mechs and had an absolute blast.

They also have the Shadowrun license though they've let Catalyst Game Labs run with it.  I wonder if it will spell the end of that line too.

Oh snap is right.  Hadn't thought about that.    I'll keep my eye out for any more info.
