The weekend's finally reared its beautiful head and welcomed me with a whole load of studying. Although the weather is freezing, I wouldn't mind having the chance to go outside and witness this 'real world' that people so often speak about.
Anyway, aside from my what seems like endless stream of magazine writing, essays and presentations, I've been playing some good ol' fashioned tabletops.
I admit it folks, I've been on a DriveThruRPG binge over the last week, buying Beyond Belief Games' complete catalogue of amazing games and a bunch of great free stuff (Witchcraft!). So I've been going a bit Barbarians of Lemuria crazy in my spare time.
For those of you who haven't heard of Beyond Belief Games, they are a small press company (incredibly small) that produces some really astounding genre games. One of my favourites is Tales from the Wood, where you play as woodland creatures in the British woodland. I've got a robin called Jack. It may sound odd and quite kiddish, but I promise you, it's awesome.
The company also produces Barbarians of Lemuria, a traditional sword and sworcery epic that's really fun to play. Aside from its freeform magic system, which works beautifully, the game focuses on being a tough as nails character, not really caring about much other than adventure and treasure. Indeed, one of the wonderful aspects of the game is how you gain experience, that is, through telling the other players and GM about how you subsequently spend/lost your hordes of treasure after your adventure. The most interesting and original stories get commended in experience points. It's brilliant!
It's important that you go and check out drivethrurpg.com for Beyond Belief Games and have fun. The games are so cheap too, all but Barbarians costing a meager $3, the latter costing $10, but that's still a nuclear explosion for your buck.
Now I'm glancing over at my desk where I have a tower of books worthy of a construction contract in Dubai waiting for me. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore media ethics, but it's like ice cream; too much can make you vomit.
I'll leave you with that image firmly branded into your mind, faithful reader. Thanks for taking the time to read this self indulgent yarn and I hope to see you soon.
