Memoirs of a Marquis Member: Chapter 6: For Whom the Bell Tolls
Chapter 6: For Whom the Bell Tolls
You have to give credit to the Invid, they are persistent bastards….pardon my English. It took us a week for us to evade them. Two days were spent actively avoiding the Invid as they searched for us. Eventually we were able to give them the slip. Even then we traveled only at night to avoid attacking the interest of an nearby Invid Patrols.
While we were waiting during the day, we would pass by discussing our options. The Knight was wondering how we could destroy an Invid hive. The Comrade, Knight, and Marine all suggested explosive options to destroy the hive from the inside. One of the ideas put forth by the Comrade, was to use a suitcase bomb. It is a suitcase that contains a nuclear bomb. A nuclear bomb inside of a suitcase?? Who comes up with these devices!! Why does anybody come up with these devices?? Apparently to blow up the first aliens that show up with energy shields obviously?
The Doctor and I were not so willing to go kick over an Invid hive without a reason. We need to figure out what it would accomplish besides how you say ‘stirring up a hornet nest’. If we better understood them, we may be able to eliminate there leaders and so confusion in their ranks. Or mess with their supplies…whatever they eat or drink.
Anyway I digress, we spent three more days hiding during the day and moving during the night. After that we were able to travel not harassed to the Alps. Once we got up into the mountains it got too difficult for the Doctor to continue riding her motorcycle. So she got into the truck with Jacque and I.
As we traveled up a mountain pass to the chateau of the family of the Knight’s fiancé, we found ourselves struggling with the snow. Fortunately, the pickup’s cab had a decent heater. I had let Jacque borrow my helmet because he thought it look cool in it. Unfortunately, we were being watched from the nearby height.
Up the mountain pass, two men appeared. One was wearing the an armor similar to the Knight and carried a rifle. Another was in Cyclone which was in a mode the Marine called Battloid. On the left was two more men wearing the same Southern Cross body armor. On the opposite side was another Cyclone which slightly smaller in size and another man in Southern Cross armor carrying a missile launcher. The Knight immediately identified himself to his Southern Cross brethren.
However they were in no mood to talk. The Cyclone pilot in the pass identified himself as Supreme Commander (insert interest adjective here) Leonard and demanded us to surrender. As he did so, a sight popped up from his shoulder and he took aim at us. It was then most of us acted out of instinct.
The Marine immediately transformed his Cyclone in battloid and jumped into air. As he did so he somersaulted over the enemy Cyclone. As the apex of the arc, he shot the Cyclone pilot in the head with his ‘toy gun’ and knocked him out. Once he lands he shoots the guy in Southern Cross armor who was also blocking the pass.
The Knight immediately raced over to the Marine pinning down the remaining enemy in the pass with his pistol. As he did so, how you say, ‘our Ace in the Hole’ moved up. Hanging back nearly one kilometer was the Pride of Russia, cloaked. When the crew heard we were under fire, they de-cloaked and raced to out rescue. They arrived in time to put harassing fire on the other Cyclone up above the mountain pass.
The Southern Cross soldiers armed with rifles attempted to salvage the situation by shooting the pick-up’s tires out. I wasn’t going to have any of that. I have seen such tactics before and was able to barely able to zig-zag out of way. Now why I would be experienced in such maneuvers, as I say I am not a nice girl.
I attempted to get revenge by running down the one Southern Cross trooper still conscious in the valley. However he saw me coming and deftly dove out of the path of the incoming truck. He was not the only one attempting to move away quickly. The rest of the Southern Cross troops had enough and began withdrawing.
The Cyclone above the mountain pass and the Southern Cross person with the Rocket Launcher attempted to destroy the tank, but the tank was able to dodge the incoming fire or shoot down the incoming missile. The Cyclone on the mountain pass then began withdrawing and began hopping across the mountain pass to safety.
His comrade with the rocket launcher was not so lucky. The tank aimed solely at him and fired its main cannon. The soldier and his rocket launcher disappeared in an explosion as the tank scored a direct hit. At least he didn’t probably feel it.
The Marine began disabling the unconscious Cyclone pilot’s Cylone to prevent him from going anywhere while shooting the remaining Southern Cross guy in the mountain pass. The Knight pulls out his rocket launcher and finishes that guy off with a well placed rocket launcher shot.
Meanwhile the unconscious Cyclone pilot wakes up and realizing what kind of situation he was in begins to power up his Cyclone again. Seeing this thru my rear view mirror, I ask Charles for help. Aiming behind my shoulder using the rear view mirror to see him, Charles spoke loud and true. Charles laid a burst on the back of the man’s head exactly where I wanted the burst to go. It didn’t hurt the man as his armor was way too thick, but it sure knocked him back out!
At this point, the remaining Southern Cross soldiers had enough and withdrew. The remaining Cyclone hopped over the mountain pass to safety and the remaining two Southern Cross soldiers disappeared in the snow. We checked on our unconscious guest, ‘Supreme Commander (insert colorful adjective here) Leonard’. Though his armor was a little banged up, he never touched his cyclone. We took it off him and converted into Storage mode (which makes look like a box with tires). I guess that how the Expeditionary Force sends troops their stuff in conveniently sized boxes.
Anyways I digress, we left the unconscious Cyclone pilot his armor because he would have froze to death without it. However I did have to put a Lorraine Cross on the back of his helmet so he always remember who had defeated him. And with that we loaded our new Cyclone on the back of the pick-up and headed further up the mountain pass.
We eventually arrived at the chateau. The first thing we noticed was that it had a prefab machinegun nest guarding the entrance way. Also up on the roof was a Cyclone, which looked exactly like one of the Cyclones we fought earlier. Still the Knight drove up on his hover cycle and knocked on the door. His mother-in-law and a few armed soldiers who looked exactly like the troops we fought earlier answered the door. Once she realized who our Knight was she invited us in. I drove up with the Doctor in our new Cyclone as the pick-up was going to have difficulty in making up the driveway in the snow. The Marine headed up with Jacque. Our Russian contingent didn’t trust the situation and remained clocked at a distance.
The château was paradise. It was as warm as a spring day in Monaco. There was all sorts of fresh foods available. We could make any sandwich we wanted from all the cold cuts she had. It was amazing!!! The mother-in-law explained that her Château had a “Geo-Thermal Tap”. Apparently it draws heat from the Earth to keep its self warm and to provide power. It was no wonder the soldiers were loyal to her. She provided them a warm, safe place to hide out in exchange for their protection. Unfortunately for me, she caught me trying to hide some sandwiches for later and threatened to throw me out into the snow. Not wanting to be Eve and getting us tossed out of paradise I gave up my ill-gotten goods. She explained that she and the soldiers had planned to hide out here indefinitely up in the mountains until the Invid went away and we could stay for a while. It was then the Knight told her what had happened to her daughter.
She was saddened by the news, but suspected that had been what happened since her daughter did not return with the Knight. She gave us rooms for the night. The Doctor and I had to share a room but we didn’t mind. It was a chance to sleep on a nice soft bed for a change. I went and took a long hot bath since I hadn’t one in ages. As I sat relaxing in the paradise I found myself in, a shot rang out. Unfortunately, it appeared that it was not the paradise I originally thought it was as the bell tolled for some one….
