I continued volunteering during the Marquis’ 7-11pm game, which mercifully let out at 9:30. During my shift I briefly supervised the food room where I met several different and fascinating people, including crazycongirl, with whom it turns out I share the same tastes in shoes and tea.
We hadn’t been hungry during the dinner break, so by 9:30 we were ravenous. The Marquis is a great fan of Applebee’s, so we went to supper at the Walpole location. We were horrified to discover it was karaoke night (none of the Applebees’ near us host karaoke). After a failed attempt at squeezing our rather large selves into a too-small booth near the “excitement,” we moved to farthest corner of the restaurant where we had a very sympathetic waiter named Tom, who as it turns out was also suffering from a cold. He informed us that Applebee’s had just recently changed their menu, and I was pleased to see a wider variety of fish and healthy options offered. I ordered the baked haddock, which comes with seasonal veggies and rice pilaf. I was disappointed, though not terribly surprised, when the rice and veggies were inedible. The baked haddock was served in cream sauce with bread crumbs on top, which while still tasty, is very different from how I’m used to seeing baked haddock served. The poor Marquis was having terrible difficulty breathing, so we left with most of his meal in a kitty-bag.
The leftovers were his breakfast Saturday morning and I ate PopTarts (a sore-throat-friendly substitute for FiberOne granola bars), sparing us a trip to Honey Dew Donuts. We went there for breakfast Friday morning where I found there coffee and donuts to be perfectly mediocre. The Marquis isn’t at all fond of breakfast foods so he was perfectly happy polishing off his leftovers and I am always happy to save money at a Con.
