I think Dire Fireflies came about as the result of a conversation with my sons. We were obviously being whimsical, but a bit of whimsy is a good thing in a creature, don't you think? The info on the spell Flare comes right from the PHB.

Dire fireflies tend to be peaceful creatures flashing their lights in the dark. If disturbed or startled, the dire firefly will emit a bright light as the spell Flare (PHB p. 232) which burts in fron tof the disturbing creature. That creature is dazzled for one minute unless it makes a successful Fort save (DC 12). The DC of the Fort save increases by +2 for each dire firefly that Flares. Sightless & already dazzled creatures are unaffected.
