$th Edition is Out
by Tuchok

Well, its finally here.  Fourth Edition.  I was in lost goblin games in Raleigh, NC, picking up my reserved copy of the Players' Handbook (figure I will get Monster Manual next week or two).   Okay, how geeky am I that this was something I was looking forward to for about the last month.

So I get it home and open it up....and its pretty...lotsa color....everywhere....little bit of brain overload on this. I appreciate the new art...nice to see a book without recycled images...but wow, that sure is a lot of color.

Book is well organized, though I think either I am going to need some reference cards, or  I will be flipping around alot.

Surprise.  Magic Items.  In the Player's Handbook. Not sure why.

More left intact than I originally anticipated, so I imagine I will still be able to steal stuff from old 3.0 or 3.5 once I start learning the mechanical differences and get past all those COLORS......

Anyway, without being too much of a WOTC lap dog, it looks good overall.  Fairly simple layout with many of the old rules intact or streamlined.

My biggest disappointment so far is no monk and no combat powers/feats/etc based around an unarmed combat build.  Oh well, its a supplement in the waiting I imagine.

I agree that there are certainly some very nice aspects to the system. Though I still haven't gotten a chance to play it, I miss the customization of characters provided by 3.5.  Obviously, simplicity of a system tends to weed out character customization (see Champions Hero System for beautiful character customization but very complex rules and long combats), but it seems like 4th Edition is almost reverting back to the 1st Edition where a fighter was a fighter and the only real differences between two fighters was their weapon choice and their magic items.  To me 3.0 was a revolution in that concept.  the customization allowed by the feat and skill system actually brought me back to D&D, when I was playing a lot more GURPS based games at the time.

Am I going to completely avoid 4th Edition?  Nope, already bought all three core books.

Am I going to give up on 3.5?  Not yet, still think Paizo our my own house rules will make headway in allowing character customization without needless game mechanic complication (i.e. See Patherfinder RPG alphas new rules for Channeling Holy/Unholy power - easier to use without losing flavor)

Would I like to see 4th Edition develop into something that has the benefits of both? Hell Yea.

I have been reading the rules myself and so far Its not bad at all.  Especially this is good news to someone who did not mind 3.5 but was not one of its favorites.  I was very open minded to 4th edition especially compared to Star Wars Saga System which seemed too simple but that was compared to Star Wars Revised D20.

Well if it is like the group I was playing with in Winston-Salem all the players were looking in the DM guide at the magic Items anyway so I guess they decided to save them a step.

Lack of monk and driud so they can sell you more books later is annoying. Rules are pretty close to the same. I do like how all the rolls (attacks, saves, skills, etc.) use the same formula.

I also like how wizard spells are with the wizard class, preist spells are with the preist class, etc. Makes looking stuff up a bit easier, same with the colors.

I will say that the ease of use has certainly increased. It feels very wargame/skirmish game oriented, though I suppose that is one of the factors that has descreased time to play through combats.

Anybody actually used this to run a game yet (not just the intro combat encounters)?

I was pleasantly surprised, myself. I think all the color is in the way of quick visual reference as there seems to be a pattern to it all, even if it has yet to register yet. As for the magic items in the PHB, it struck me as odd too, until I got to thinking  about who uses them the most - the players.

There are no magic items in the DMG, btw, so it seems that they have moved them to the PHB so the players can reference them easily. I suppose they are assuming that DMs will have both DMG and PHB.
