Chapter 12: Everlasting Regret
(OOC: Dominique picked a different movie title for the Journal entry On Deadly Ground, but I think this title is better fitting for her mood. Anyways on with the entry…)
Then things truly went how you say…’south.’ They showed up right on the over the fight. Three armed lobsters and three crabs each came from both sides. Immediately three of the army were wiped out in a hail of energy blasts. The Marine and Jacque immediately raced back to hangar to get into the truck. The Doctor jumped in front of the truck to protect the Marine and Jacque. I immediately jumped to the edge of the pier and dropped the councilman into the bay, and then fired a barrage of missiles at one of the crabs. Unfortunately, I missed.
The Pride of Russia began heading back to city to pull away from the Invid. The Comrade followed trying to provide covering fire. The Pride of Russia blasted two of the crabs out of the sky. The Comrade eliminated one of the lobsters with a well placed shot to the eye. Two of the surviving lobsters began firing on the tank, while a surviving crab took a swing at the Comrade.
Meanwhile, the militia had their fill and began fleeing the area. Some took pots shots at the Doctor and the truck, bad damaging the truck. Three Crabs descended on me and took swings at me, but I was too quick for them and managed to get out of their way. Three more Lobsters closed on the The Doctor took out one using the Payload Rifle from the back of the truck. I managed to down one of the scouts in a hail of rocket fire from my Forager. I am not a good shot with missiles, but when you fire a lot of them you don’t have to be that accurate do you?
Anyways I digress; the Pride of Russia continued its breakout attempt towards the city. Along the way it downed another of the lobsters. The Comrade then dispatched the crab that was interfering with his escort. The militia continued with their escape only pausing to fire on the Doctor and our truck. The truck was barely functioning but still it joined the tank in its breakout attempt.
The Doctor threw me her “toy rifle” as she fired the Payload Rifle into the last crab, killing it with a well placed shot to the eye. I immediately took the toy rifle and fired into the back of one of the lobsters in attempt to draw some of the lobsters of the Pride of Russia.
The Pride of Russia continued its break out attempt as it finally reach the city, it attempted to fire but for some reason the cannon refused to fire. The Pride of Russia disappeared into the city with a pair of the lobsters in hot pursuit. The Comrade jumped into the truck as it went down a different street and disappeared in the city.
That left just the Doctor, the Crab, a couple of lobsters, and about a hundred militiamen. Of course, the militiamen weren’t much use as they were jumping off the docks, hiding in the warehouses, and just making themselves unavailable. They wouldn’t stand a chance against the lobsters, anyhow, and were just as likely to shoot as us as the lobsters. I fired on both the lobsters with the “toy rifle” but only one shot hit a lobster in the eye. However, the lobster dropped like a how you say…”bad habit.” I was impressed, a Bushmaster wouldn’t have been able to do that, however the “toy rifle” did it with ease.
Anyways I digress; the Doctor immediately downed the remaining lobster with the payload rifle, and then turned it on the remaining militiamen in the area. They promptly surrendered. They threw down their rifles, and we let them go.
The Doctor then went into the remains of her brother’s Battloid to download the contents of its computer. I kept an eye out while she worked on the Battloid’s computer. I also took the opportunity to spray the Lorainne cross on a nearby warehouse. When the Doctor had gathered the computer’s info, we took the Battloid’s rifle and headed out to find the others.
The first thing we found was the remains of the Pride of the Russia. The Invid had done a thorough job on the Pride and it was hardly recognizable as a tank. The Pride of Russia had put up a good fight, but in the end the Invid had proven too much. We then immediately looked around for the tank crew.
The crew had taken refuge in a nearby building. Unfortunately, the driver had been hit by shrapnel as she bailed out of the tank and was losing a lot of blood. The Sergeant had done his best to stop the bleeding, but it was a slow losing battle.
About that time, the Comrade and the Marine showed up in a Hummer. The truck had finally broken down and as they parked in an alley, they ran into one of the militia few surviving jeeps. In a brief firefight, the Comrade flipped over the Hummer and he and the Marine chased off the militiamen. The Comrade and the Marine then transferred our gear to the Hummer and then headed out to find the rest of us.
The Doctor immediately went to work on the Annika, while the Comrade pulled out what medical gear we had. The Doctor was able to stabilize Annika but she was still in a very critical condition. I then suggest we take her to a doctor I knew that was in town. We loaded her into the Hummer and I lead them to the doctor.
Doctor Issac Tapuzi was a kind hearted man. No matter when I showed up, or how many bullet wounds I had, he always would fix me up…no question asked. He just interested in making sure his patients were doing well. So when I showed up on his door step, it was nice to see at one person in this town hadn’t change. He immediately went to work trying to save the Annika.
In the meanwhile, I broke down. There is no way I can ever come back to this town after all this, there will never be a time for me life would be…normal. Worse of all….
(OOC: Dried Tear drops cover this part of the journal entry).
Anyways, I digress; I tried to hid off on my own so I could cry on own so no one would be bothered by it. However the Marine, wouldn’t have any of it. He followed me and asked me what was wrong and I just broke down in his arms. He just sat there and held me while I cried it out. It was very nice of him.
Eventually the Doctor found us and shared some wine with us. She tried to share some with the Comrade, but he was already loaded from the vodka. Good stuff that stuff vodka, a little bit and helps you remember…a lot of it and it helps you forget.
It was then the Doctor realized that Jacque wasn’t with us. It all the excitement of today, I didn’t notice that Jacque was not among us either. The Marine said the last time he saw him was during the firefight with the militia’s Hummer. The Doctor, the Marine, and I immediately went out to look for Jacque.
We must looked have all over Monaco trying to find Jacque. Eventually we found him with a kind old woman feeding him. We came up and thanked her, and I told her that he was my younger brother. However she didn’t believe me and pushed Jacque inside her house. As she closed the door behind her, the Doctor asked her to look after Jacque and soon we heard at least five locks lock into place. Jacque finally had a home, I hope he finds the peace that I could never find here…
