Now, I'll be honest; I had to look this book up as it had been a long time since I read the Bible. But no sooner had I grabbed my children's version to look through it, I remembered then a general synopsis of it containing rules and lots of them too. I looked up the book in Wikipedia to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything of significance and lo and behold, there was the abstract statinq some of those rules. But I recall albeit possibly incorrectly, there were instructions, rules, on how to develop Israel's first temple as well.
In a sense, rules gives us structure to shape and form an idea whether it be a new religion or more humbly in my case, a new campaign, a new game, a new website and a new community. For that structure to be communicated to others they are in the form of instructions. Thus, the more instructions one has; the more defined the structure will be. Finally, the more defined the structure becomes; the stronger the construct will be to build upon and withstand the lack of clarity. That way everyone knows what the standards are. Still, all of us are human and are likely to make mistakes even the GM.
It's no wonder that Chapters 6,7 and 8 of the AO Core Rulebook reads like the Book of Leviticus. As a couple of reviewers from "All Games Considered" (Warning: This links to an mp3 [49:09 min] 22MB. For faster downloading, right-click and select "Save Target As...") had described the Core Rulebook as "crunchy", the designated word of the day it seemed over there, I couldn't help but think of a little monologue from a CBC radio drama called, Six Days That Shook the Walt. So with that being said, in response, I say, "Welcome to my world". If you think that was rough, let me introduce you to the other half of building the new home to our RP community, NeoPangea. As web designer/admin, I've been on a steep learning curve for the past six months -- learning programming rules I never dreamed of wanting to do to get this portal up and running and it's still growing, evolving, changing as we speak. But it's worth it despite how much of my hair has landed on the floor around my desk chair.
So, kudos to Mind Storm Labs to making their rulebook "crunchy". One look at Dave's hair in this video shows just how much effort these guys are putting into their game. :D *exits quickly Stage Left*
