My wife picked up the game ZOMBIES!!! at OGC. Fun game to play with family and friends. A horrible game to play with family and friends until two o'clock in the morning. But I just couldn't stop!
We started at 10. The game began normally. The zombie count rose as we extended the playing field with more city tiles. Eventually, we had all the tiles laid out, including the heliport which was, of course, infested with the walking dead. But no one could get there. Zombies rained down from above to replace the ones we had killed. People continued to die and respawn in the town square, which was also a pit of undead. The one player who had racked up enough bodies to be within striking distance of the body-count win, was continually thwarted as we killed the zombies near him, moved them away from him, and him away from them. Event cards flew as we continued to screw each other in devious ways.
As the clock continued to pass into the wee hours of the morning, the other players, growing weary at the length of the game, began to fudge things in favor of the player with the large pile of zombies, hoping to put an end to it all. I resisted and continued to prevent him and others from making their goals while the other players berated me. But finally, as the clock approached 2, he managed to move into an area where he could make the last two kills he needed. He made the first kill easily and moved toward the final target. That target was inside the Sporting Goods store. He pulled out the chainsaw card, playable only while you are in Sporting Goods, giving himself a +2 on his attack. Having a single health left, the odds came down to this: to fail he needed to roll a 1 twice in a row. Success meant winning and putting an end to the midnight game from hell. He rolls a 1. Amidst cheers and groans, he dropped his final health chit back in the bucket. Another 1 would mean being sent back to the town square with a new life and the game would continue. I'll wager a single roll of the die was never so anticipated in a game of Zombies!!!
In case you haven't guessed, he made his roll and the game ended. But it left me with only five hours of sleep when I went to work this morning. One zombie survived that game last night and he needs more coffee.
