Well, we're here, and the smell is overwhelming. I know we're all proud of our gamer-geek status, but this is one gamer stereotype I'd love to see washed -up, so to speak. Thankfully, our BattleTech Group back in Albany, NY is stink-free, but conventions never fail to remind me of what happens to most men when they don't have women around to badger them. Apparently the "Hygiene and You" seminar was cancelled (as was the "Understanding Gamers" seminar, much to my disappointment), so I shall now take it upon myself to give a small lesson in basic American hygiene.
1. Take a bath or shower as needed. Many people shower everyday, but others prefer to shower every-other day; the decision is usually based on the individual’s level of activity and rate of perspiration. Make sure to use soap ALL over and shampoo your hair. Rinse, repeat. For the hardcore gamer, repeat SEVERAL times until all the grime washes off.
2. Wear clean clothes (outerwear and underwear). Putting dirty clothing on a clean body defeats the purpose of bathing.
3. It is customary in the United States to use deodorant/antiperspirant. This is an inexpensive way to not offend those around you. If you are concerned about possible health risks associated with the use of deodorant/antiperspirant, there are several “all natural” brands available.
4. Practice good oral hygiene. This generally includes brushing (with toothpaste), flossing, and using mouthwash at least twice a day.
5. Wash your hands frequently. Especially wash them anytime they come in contact with bodily fluids such as urine, feces, or mucus. Be sure to clean under your fingernails.
6. Other tips: Don’t pick your nose in public. Don’t clean out your ears in public. Don’t bite your nails. Don’t pick scabs or pop pimples. If you’re going to sneeze or cough cover your mouth with a tissue or your upper arm. If you do sneeze into your hands, go wash them or use an antibacterial solution. Don't scratch any area of your body which is covered by clothing. Don't expell gas public if you can help it, and if you can't then immediately beg the pardon of those around you.
These are just the basics. If you’re interested in REALLY impressing the ladies, cut your hair, shave, and splash on a little cologne.
And if you see me, stop and say hi :)
