Today I’m wearing a black tee-shirt with white writing. I know, how original at a Con! But again, the ears and tail make it easier to spot me. Because of my back trouble, I wear sneakers and carry a gold back support roll.
Since all the events I was interested in today are either cancelled or sold out I will be spending most of my time today with the Marquis in either the BattleTech or MechWarrior rooms, in the Westin lobby’s uncomfortable chairs playing on my computer, or in the Dealer’s Room trying to decide what to spend the Marquis’ hard earned money on. Any suggestions?
I’m quite exhausted so I might head back to the hotel early and leave the Marquis here to battle it out. We’re staying at an off-site hotel, which is why I now bring you…
A WORD TO THE WISE ABOUT STAYING OFF-SITE
Yes, it’s cheaper. That’s why we do it. We also have a kitty-baby who travels with us and pet friendly hotels are few and far-between. But remember: Indianapolis is under construction and traffic gets backed up. Just because MapQuest says it only takes 20 minutes to get from your hotel to the Con you still have to factor in traffic, parking, and getting to the Con from wherever you have the misfortune to park. I strongly recommend doubling the time it should take to get here from wherever you’re coming from so that you don’t miss your event. Oh, and if you have to register for an event, give yourself at least a half an hour to get through the lines. Yes, you might end up with a lot of time to kill, but the dealer’s room is FULL of things to do and look at while you wait for your event to start.
As for getting back to your hotel, just because you got to the Con without difficulty (I hope), don’t assume you can get back to your hotel as easily. I, the great and powerful Kitty, made the same mistake yesterday as I made last year: I was overly confident that I knew what I was doing and I screwed up (FYI: 96th Street does NOT become West 96th Street). I drove around Indy for a good hour with a hungry and tired Marquis in the passenger seat. Be sure to get directions to and from everywhere you’re going, and follow them.
RESTAURANT REVIEW: New China Buffet on West 86th Street
We decide last night that Chinese sounded good, and this was the closest buffet to our hotel. It was cheap but not very good when compared to what we’re used to in Albany, NY. They have potato chips instead of fried noodles, there’s not much of a selection, and there's no table service whatsoever. The radio station they had tuned in seemed to play inappropriate content for a family restaurant, and even I don’t want to hear the lyrics “I'm so addicted to / All the things you do / When you're going down on me / In between the sheets” while I’m trying to eat.
Warning: the Hunan Chicken is extremely spicy.
