Final Conclusion: Robotech stinks, Classic Macross rules!
After a long Summer of Robotech: Macross Saga with my kids I thought it would be cool to show them the Macross movie. Now I have seen the original uncut version on a big screen TV back when I was a teen. The copy I have is the Clash of the Bionoids version, which is the extremely cut story.

My kids spoke: Dad, I like Macross much better than Robotech. I have to agree. The animation is better, the story is better and the music is a heck of a lot better. What was I thinking? I used to be big into Robotech as a kid and even kept up the fandom of the series recently, but Macross blows it away. Add that to Macross II: Lovers Again and you have a kick-butt series to run games from.

Besides the music being better, the whole Veritech Fighter, Veritech Tank and Alpha and Beta Fighter thing just kills me. I mean, come on! They would have been better off taking Megazone 23 and Mesopeda (sp) to make Robotech. At least Macross has consistancy. For now.

But if you compare Guyver: Out of Control to the two Guyver series it's the other way around.

It's too bad that Macross II got sold short. I actually have the tapes, soundtracks and DVD. I even saw it in the theatres. One of the best series I have seen yet from Japan. Followed by Gundam Stardust Memories and Bio-Booster Armor Guyver.

I tried to enjoy the Shadow Chronicles of Robotech and did enjoy most of it. But you know they will never come up with a new series with decent animation.

Cpmparing Macross the Movie to any TV animation series isn;t fair. You are comparing feature film animation and productions to TV stuff. Even in the original Japanese stuff there is a distinct difference. Also, Macross II is not actually part of the canon story arc but a sort of wierd alternate offshoot. Macross 7 and Macross Plus and the like are part of the official arc.

I do agree that if you take the Robotech stuff and compare it to anything in America at the time it came out, it was awesome. If you compared it to the anime of the time and even of today, it still fell flat, but it was really the best we could get at the time. The owrld has change, my friend, for you and I and all those ol' school anime fans who actually had to work for their hobby.

Now days there is so much of that stuff available, it's crazy. No more having to prowl through obscure specialty shops or venturing into the depths of the city to find that one book, model, or VHS bootleg. Anime fans these days don't know how good they got it..;)

I actually read one of the McKinney novels for grad school. It was so bad I couldn't get through it. Then 6 months later I picked up Stephen King's book Cell and it was just as bad for the same reason. TOO MUCH DETAIL.

But what really took the cake for the Robotech Books were the whole "If you play the RPG you'll know what I am talking about."

Sometimes I hate Carl Macek for what he's done.  Other time, meh-think of it as a gateway drug into anime and appreciate it for that. 

I will say that the novels by they mysterious individuals who called themselves Jack McKinney are an abomination-they took some rediculous liscense and their final novel was decannonized for its stupidity.
