Okay so I’ve been really lazy. I got home from GenCon and spent the first three days trying to catch up on my sleep and the next three days trying to get my house in order. Well I’m still tired and my house is still a mess, so I might as well tap this out before it fades from my memory…
It’s sooo big. It’s TOO big. Too big to make a decision about where you want to go, what you want to do, and even what to eat. The costumes are varied and brilliant and the people are even MORE varied and… well sometimes brilliant, other times not so much, though I do think I detect higher IQ levels among gamers than I do when I’m out in the general population. (Any other MENSA members out there, by the way? Drop me a line.)
The Marquis pointed out to me on our 13 hour drive home that I complain a lot in my blogs. Well yes I do, because I know for a fact that HE never listens to me. But I will make a point of pointing out the things I enjoyed about the Con. And then I will proceed to criticize. Sound good? Good.
Costumes
The Good: I loved the costumes! They were so great. I wish I had the money and the talent to make costumes.
The Bad: Walking alone after dark I was jeered at by some norms on the street. Note to self: stop walking alone after dark.
The Ugly: Women are beautiful! I love seeing beautiful women in sexy outfits. If you got it, flaunt it. What I don’t like? Little girls in sexy outfits. Yuck.
Size
The Good: Anything and everything you ever wanted to do in terms of gaming is available.
The Bad: Certain indecisive people can’t make up their minds about what they want to do and spend the entire Con playing on their laptop in the Westin Lobby.
The Ugly: The lines. Let’s face it: they were long and they weren’t moving.
Dealer’s Room
The Good: Anything and everything you ever wanted to buy in terms of gaming is available.
The Bad: It took me four visits to canvas the entire Hall and three more to figure what the bloody hell I wanted. (Spiral triskele earrings and new ears – pics to follow.)
The Ugly: *Push*Shove* “Who just grabbed my @$$?” I was terrified that I was going to be knocked down and die in a stampede.
Dance
The Good: It’s a geek dance. Yay!
The Bad: I’m 21 and most of these people look younger than I am. WTF?
The Ugly: AHHHHHH WE PLAY REALLY ANGRY ROCK MUSIC REALLY LOUD AND NO ONE CAN HEAR THEMSELVES THINK AND IT’S REALLY AWESOME AHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Yeah. We didn’t even dance. We left.
SPA Events
The Good: It gives us widows something to do when we can’t tolerate another dice roll.
The Bad: I feel kinda weird going alone.
The Ugly: Most of them were sold out anyway.
I enjoyed the experience. I always do, but it’s exhausting for an old woman like myself. And I didn’t end up meeting anybody from RPGBomb. Oh well. There’s always next Con, which for us will be TotalCon as far as I know.
In terms of GenCon 2009, I have two words: “Flying” and “Marriott.”
