Last week (posted today) The Group managed to Set a Smoking pile of Pine leaves in the Caves, Technically they also did some other things but I could not post it, lest they read this blog and figure out some of the adventure in between time.
I guess thats part of the problem with the story line, In the movies, you can cut to the bad guy, what he's doing, whats going on, let the players understand the plot from the opposite side of the table, because as an audience, they dont have any ability to affect the plot..
My players are still new to gaming, fantasy, english and roleplay, trying to dump the concepts of meta-gaming, acting out of character, using player knowledge vs using character knowledge,, Its still new and I dont want to enforce it.
So, I could not yet post the events from the goblins side of things.. until now..
---------------------------------------------
(Deep within the goblin caves, The guards ran to tell their leader, Gruthyak Nugrui, that a crazy wolf had attacked the rear entrance. Then a few moments later screams of fire and smoke were heard. Gruthyak understood, this was an assult. Calling for his scouts, he issued orders, dipping his hand into the blood of the human, he marked several papers, handed them to the scouts, and then wiped the blood across his face.
His Smith, had been hard at work on the breast plate of the human knight,. fashioning some shoulder plates. He grabbed them, strapped them on and drew out Morgrui, his Serrated Blade of Goblin Champions. Morgrui allowed his rulership over the clan these last seven winters. these upstart humans would be no trouble for Morgrui.
Calling upon his folk, he summoned 20 of his finest concubines, some barely young girls, he grabbed the ears of his 3 finest warriors, and he sent them straight up his personal exit passage into the light. He would fight these human scum on the surface, surrounded by his death entourage, lest he die this day.)
The Heroes, having dispatched the goblin hunters, now looked around, they could see smoke from the main tunnel, but they expected to see other places, other exits from the warrens. There!, they spotted another patch of smoke rising into the afternoon sky. Scady climbed the dirt walls, and scaled the cliff face, after a few moments he dissapeared over the ride from the rest.
A few hills over, scady could see a cave entrance, emerging were, what seemed to him as women and children, He also spotted a slope down to the valley, and quickly ran over to call up his friends. Within a few minutes they approached the group of helpless goblins.
Shock and horror, as they came closer, they dropped to the ground.. the Chief, with the big hammer had emerged.
---------------(and now for this week)------------------------
The immediate plan was to run, Harvey called it. But Scady was convinced that taking advantage of the chaos now would be far better than trying a third time to a set of well prepared goblins. Scady stayed to watch, while, the group quickly ran to the trees, but a twig snapped underfoot, and the goblins came to investigate. Harvey whispered to Sir Draco.. "I'll summon an image of a monster, maybe a gargoyle!", "No," Draco snapped back "make it one of the seven, the Boar, the forest lord of these parts", "good Idea" as he spun around, and cast the image spell, summoning up the Boar warrior of local legends.
The goblins were surprised, taken aback, aghast, they could not believe their eyes, The Boar god of the forest had deigned to come to their aid. They froze, bowed down to the god, and stood back in awe..
Scady ducked to the grass, hoping to sneak up upon the group..
The goblins then noticed, the Boar god did not smell, stood totally still, he was not a god.. this was nothing but some statue.. Argh they screamed, looking around, they spotted Scady in the grass.. as he spotted them, and let loose his crossbow.
Thre goblins ducked, they could not afford to face such a weapon, so they gathered rocks, and threw them over the hillock.
Hundreds of small stones begane to reign down over scady, none too serious, but one or two scatches and bruises, scady quickly ducked up behind the statue, and tried to aim..
But Mirages, when confronted with reality, such as a flying rock, quickly dissapear.. so Scady decided it was time for him to do the same.. he ran.
Screamin down after his companions, they quickly gathered their things and ran full pelt from the goblin warren, they ran and they ran.. but the goblins were furious, and they persued, hot on their heels.
After a full few minutes of running, scady noticed the goblins were starting to gain, Their small stature, and quick reflexes allowed them to dodge small branches, and go through undergrowth, where the heroes could not.
They would have to make a stand.
Calling out to his friends.. "Guys, We need a tree to climb, and we can rain arrows down on them"
"This one" called Amarta,
"no This" yelled back Scady.
Draco's Commanding voice, "I have the perfect tree, come here", He stopped infront of a great Oak, clutched his hands together to make a step", and I'll boost you all up into the tree"
One by one they group climbed up, But Draco remained on the ground, Weapon drawn, he prepared to fight.
Amarta, drew out her longbow, given to her by the group to defend herself.. She was no archer, but a keen eye, and skimming rocks to hit frogs in her youth paid off, She strung and fired arrow after arrow. At first it seemed easy, the targets were getting closer every second, and running stright for them, a shot here and a shot there, and one goblin struck the ground. but the others, now noticing the incoming shots, started darting around trees, under bushes, and dodging left and right. Amarta could no longer shoot so effectively, yet she tried, again and again.
The goblins were relentless, they just kept coming. Scady got some good shots in with his crossbow, deep penetrating bolts, shot into the champion, racing towards them, but taking almost a full 20 seconds to reload, was just so slow, the fear began to creep into his eyes..
Harvey, with nothing much to do was tapping his staff in readiness against the branch. Nerves, and fear, the tapping was sporadic, but as luck would have it, he tapped out a message.
"come friends" , "pretty girls" , "I am in danger", "evil comes", "nuts and berries", "danger is near".
The goblins, a full 300 metres back from the party, ducked and weaved, and yet still the arrows found their mark, Two gobkin warriors were downed. the third following along his leader, suddenly dissapeared into the undergrowth.
The goblin Champion, Village leader, Bladeweilder. stopped, His armour was too touch for the arrows to penetrate deeply, and most missed him, but a nick in the flesh of his leg told him, something other than an arrow had made the wound.. He turned to face the ground. a dart here and a shadow there, he started screaming, and attacked the ground around him, nicks and cuts he suffered, but then a scream of some high pitch.. a few more slices here and there, and another arrow in his shoulder, but he took advantage of a mistep, and sliced quickly, a small splatter of blood, and a small head flung from the undergrowth striking Amarta across the face, she briefly glimpsed the eyes of something surprised.
The goblin looked up again at the tree, put away his blade and drew out his hammer. The Hammer of the Earth Shaker. The first strike was upon the ground, the blow struck out at the land, and the heroes were flung against the tree, Harvey fell from his branch and bruised his leg. Then the Goblin ran at the tree, he struck the very heart bole of the great tree, and the centre of it exploded. Shards of Tree flew off in every direction, the greater part of the trunk fell down Hard, upon harvey, Amarta and Scady were flung far into the forest.
Draco stood alone.
The goblin dropped his hammer, and goaded the warrior into a fist fight, but Draco was not so stupid, he swung with his sword, nicking the goblin warrior. So the Gruthyak drew out his blade, extended its shaft into a polearm, and began to fight.
The blades clashed against each other time and again, Gruthyak the obvious better fighter, but Draco a tougher opponent. a few times the jagged edge of the goblins weapon scored hits against Draco, but Draco just could not penetrate his defences to get a decent blow, Suddenly Scady was on the scene, his staff whipping out towards the goblin. Gruthyak was a skilled fighter, but the distraction was too much, and he let down his guard against Dracos for one half second too long. Dracos's blade sunk Deep into Gruthyaks belly, the entrails spilled out around him, and he gasped, surprised, and died.
The group gathered themselves, wiped off blades, and thanked their gods that they had survived such a ferocious battle. But the danger was not yet over. Gruthyaks had one last trick..
Dracos bent down to pick up the blade of the Goblin warrior, and as he did so, and intense, deadly force began to enter his body.. Gruthyak was taking him over, Luckily, Scady was also curios about the blade and had approached at the same time, as he noticed the grimace come over the face of his friend, he quickly knocked the blade from his hands..
being careful not to touch the weapon, it was wrapped in rope and backpacks, amongst the other treasures the goblins carried.
Now for the real question.. At 1 gold per head.. did they have the stomach, the morale or the lack of.. to kill goblin women and children?
