My partner Paula and I will begin homeschooling our two daughters this fall, and I've been mulling over different ways to bring roleplaying into the teaching process.
Sure, there are historic RPGs we could play -I have a ton of GURPS sourcebooks for a bunch of different time periods and cultures - but I'm thinking of something beyond history, too. I'd love to explore the ways I could use an RPG to teach science:
- PCs with a spaceship must track a bad guy across the solar system, collecting clues about his nefarious plans, while also managing their fuel and other resources, and protecting themselves from the varying environments on the different planets. (I've actually been developing this idea for use in a classroom.)
- PCs with a defective time machine are sent back into prehistoric times, and must figure out what era they've landed in based on the flora and fauna they've encountered, so they can properly set the controls for a return trip home.
That's all I have so far, but I'm sure there are lots of other ways to approach it. Got any great ideas? Share them in comments, or email me at RPGadvocate/at/gmail/dot/com!
