Epic Level Wins and Losses
by Myth

I was bored today so I started unpacking more boxes left over from my big move (What?  I had a lot fo boxes and I get lazy.  Sue me.) and I found my old character binder from college..

Inside this binder are most of the character sheets and notes from games I played in while I was at Purdue.  I have Dietrich von Stadt, Ventrue Prince of Cleveland in here, along with Korath Broketusk, a 9th level Eye of Gruumsh.  There are plenty more in here from a bunch of other games, but one is prized above all others.  It's from the longest running DnD game I've ever been in, and it has so many eraser marks on the sheet that I had to rewrite the whole thing twice, and the final version still looks pretty ratty.

It's Tai Dayhawk, my 18th level Druid.  That's right, he's a straight druid.  No prestige classes, although I did take some feats from the World of Warcraft book that our GM let us convert over without having to take ranks in Healer first.  He was my first epic level character, and we had some great times with him.  We played in the world of Azeroth, first using the d20 conversion book from White Wolf then later using the WoW d20 books to help our campaign.

Such highlights of his career included:

1.  The successful defense of Stormwind against a horde of rampaging undead.  It was successful in that the Keep survived the battle!...the rest of the city not so much, but we saved 1/8 of the city!  (Rumors that one of our party members got a little too zealous with gunpowder and leveled part of the city are vicious lies spread by our detractors...also, it helped keep out the undead!)

2.  Solved the Riddle of the Ancient Ones and their mysterious machine located out in the far desert!  Our GM actually came up with a puzzle for us to solve and we successfully did so.  Unfortunately, we kind of released the spirit of Death into the world in the form of a cute little bear with cookie antennas, but we later bribed it into leaving Creation.

3.  Contacted the Titans out on their far world and got their aid in fighting the Elemental Gods.  This part even I'm shocked at, and I'm the one who came up with the plan.  So the Titans were pretty much jerks to us, and they said "There is no way we're coming to help your world.  Deal with it yourself."  So I worked up an idea which involved us opening a portal to the world the Titans were currently on, and then I unleashed a horde of Elementals through the portal to attack them.  When the Titans tried to find who did it, we said the Elemental Gods had sent their troops to kill the Titans, and it worked!  It freaking worked!  Although apparently I signed Azeroth up for a "Reboot" by the Titans in a couple of centuries...

4.  Led an army to war with the Trolls and their dark Troll god.  Later became the ruler of the Trolls by shapeshifting into one, which was awesome because I freakin' love trolls.

But enough about my epic level events...what about yours?  Any game, genre, or setting will do folks.  I'm curious about what you guys have done that's so much fun.

Well, I have to say I haven't reached any epic levels, nor have I any real fond memories of any particular character, but I am looking forward to this year, and the (hopefully) long campaign that my roommate is setting up for us.

I'm going to be playing a Githzerai Monk sent to the material plane to accomplish two things. 1) To complete his training and 2) to gain information about Githyanki movements. The more that I think about this character, and the the more work I put into it, the more I fall in love with this creation. That, and I kinda can't wait to actually hurt and kill some things. Really hard to do that as a level one wizard.

(MC's note: Wizard is still, by far, my favorite class to play.)

In the more 'mature' games I played... Well, I say mature but it was the games that began after the hiatus between being an 8-12 year old munchkin with the billionth level characters and artifacts and a smug knowledge that if adventurers were going to assault my wizard's refuge they would go through the elaborate dungeon rather than flying through the windows in the top floor of his tower...
It was a teenage reboot of gaming and there were two groups that eventually melded and self destructed due to conflict of gaming priorities. The group I had the most fun with were story driven and rules lite to a degree that it was almost communal campfire storytelling. The other was crunchy, argumentative, liked long drawn out dice hurling combats that frankly bored the piss out me.
I do remember an 'epic level' game ran in the rules lite group where I played an illusionist that passed himself off as an avatar of some Greyhawkian deity... It may have been Saint Cuthbert. It was all fireworks, alter self spells, and lots of careful roleplaying. There was also plenty of complaints about DM favoritism since I was a godling and the DM simply responded that *anyone* could have generated such a character if they had approached him in the right manner.
The ruse lasted about three gaming sessions before weaknesses in his story and abilities became obvious although the characters were good sports and maintained the outward illusion as it simply helped intimidate well.. everyone they ran into. Until the cocky illusionist was buying the party some time to retreat and became a pincushion thanks to orcish archers that were none too impressed with his claims and fireworks shows on holy wrath.
Once the character was found out to be a decidedly mediocre illusionist the 'fun' kind of went out of him.
