Strange World Part 2: The cabin in the woods
Posted On 05/23/2008 13:47:42
Well, it wasn’t pitch dark. The door was ajar, which let a little light in. And some of the shutters had cracks in them. The light they let in didn’t count for much and wouldn’t let me see anything. So, it might as well have been pitch dark for all the good it did me. I was lying on my face in an old abandoned cabin that no one has been in for decades. And I can’t see what the hell is around me. But I didn’t get up right away. No, I knew enough to keep still and keep quiet until I could hear if anything was moving—or breathing. I heard a bird outside—a crow. It’s always a crow. But there was nothing inside here. Or, at least I couldn’t hear anything. No movement. No breathing. No sounds. So why did I have the feeling I was being watched?

Okay, it’s just nerves. Yeah, right. I'm not that nervous. I got to my feet and looked around. I went to the door and carefully opened it wide. It creaked a lot, but it swung easily enough. I'd probably loosened all the crud that clogged the hinges when I smashed it open. I could see much more of the cabin now. A wall split the cabin in two, and I stood in the main room which took up most of the cabin's length. There was a table in the section farthest from the other room; I could only see this end of it before it disappeared into the darkness away from the door. The wall opposite the door had a counter running along it. It looked old and it was rotting; I doubt it would hold much weight. I'd bet the table was in the same condition. There was a single doorway in the center of the north wall that led into what must be the bedroom. There was no door; either that or it opened inward and was out of sight. This was great! With all the exploring that I've done, I've never found anything this cool before. If only I had a camera with me...

Wait! My cell phone. I dug into my pocket and pulled it out. It's camera isn't great, but it's better than nothing. I flipped it open, switched it to camera mode, and began aiming it around. I stared at the tiny screen as I held it in front of me and began slowly rotating around clockwise until I could get a view of something worth snapping a picture of. The darkness and tip of the table? No. The wall and the door to the outside? Uh uh. Oh, the far wall with the counter! I turned more quickly to put my back toward the outside door, skimming past the wall with the door to the bedroom.

What the hell was that?

I turned back to the bedroom door, not bothering to look through the camera this time. The doorway was black, just like before. But I swear I saw something, or someone standing in that doorway through the camera's display. I held the camera up and looked at the doorway through it. Nothing. I stepped inside the doorway and looked around. It was all dark. A little bit of light filtered in through closed shutters, but I couldn't make anything out. But the room felt weird. The air seemed heavier here and I didn't like it. It was like when you walk into a room filled with people that don't like you and they're all staring at you. The tension gets so thick you feel like it's hard to breathe and all you want to do is get out. That's how it felt here. I wasn't staying long, but I wanted a picture before I left. I
held the camera up in front of me pressed the button. There was a pause and then the flash illuminated the room for a second.

"Jesus!" I jumped backward, my heart pounding, my body shaking. I saw a woman. A woman had been standing directly in front of me in that dark bedroom. I saw her for only a second, but the image was etched in my mind and I can still see it now like it just happened. She was just a tad shorter than me, with long scraggly black hair and dressed in dirty rags. She was pale and dirty, with bags under her eyes. But it was the expression that got me--that made me jump. Or maybe it was her lack of expression. She just stood there with her arms at her side and there was nothing there. Her eyes were empty and there was no hint of emotion whatsoever in that pale face.

"W-who are you?" I said, and my voice sounded way too loud and harsh here. The sun chose that moment to dip behind a cloud and the room was plunged into darkess. The heaviness in the air entered the main room, and I knew that the woman I saw wasn't anything that was alive. It was ghost, or whatever, and it didn't want me here. And it came into my room!

I turned and ran. I went out the front door, leaving it wide open, and ran back into the woods and toward the nearest trail. I ran for a while before I felt safe enough to stop and catch my breath. Now, I don't want you judging me. I'm every bit as tough and fearless as you are. I'd love to see what you'd do if you saw that thing in that cabin. You'd run screaming like a baby, I bet.

I had taken a picture of it. When I get home I'll look at it. Then I'll show it to Kevin. He'll want to see it. And then, maybe we'll get a group together and come back. This time, I'll be ready for it. I'll be prepared. This time, I won't run away.

Well there you go. My first story post completed. It was short but fun, and it gives you a taste of what the new game I'm publishing is like. It's called Strange World, and it's all about paranormal investigation. And it's about the real world of today. Not "the real world, but with these changes." It is exactly the world we're in right now...you and me. It's just seen through the eyes of those who investigate ghosts and UFOs and Bigfoot. Strange World is also a non-fiction reference book about the paranormal. After all, how can you play the role of a real paranormal investigator if you don't know what they know?

So, what do you want to see next? Do you want our friend to bring his buddies back to the cabin and do a real investigation, or would you like them to take on a new case. Investigate something else? Please, leave a comment and let me know the direction you'd like.

Strange World Part 1
Posted On 05/13/2008 23:19:41

Robin Hood forest is a lot bigger than people realize. Like nearly all woods in New Hampshire, it stretches out from the town that gave it its name and connects with other forests to build a network of trees that covers much of the state. Most people just stay on the trails and think its just part of the park, but there is so much more. I've made it a personal goal to explore the forest so completely that it will be impossible to get lost.

That's when it happened; when my eyes opened wide for the first time and I saw things I never thought could exist. It changed my life, setting it on a course so wholly different from the one I had planned. I don't regret it now. It's been my focus for the past few years, and I wouldn't want it any other way—but I digress. Let me start from the beginning, so that you will understand...

It was a beautiful day. The noonday sun tried hard to reach me through the thick canopy above me, and I thought I could see some blue poking through the leaves. A slight, chill breeze brushed my cheek and I breathed in a great draught of spring air, reveling in the nature that was all around me. I took the last bite of my sandwich and adjusted my seat on the boulder. This was just one of thousands of big rocks that littered the uneven floor of the forest. You see, glaciers went through here ages ago and they left behind huge boulders—natures litter. There are tons of these in the forest, and many of them have piled on each other to form caves that bears and other animals use for shelter. One such cave is not far from me, but it’s empty now but sports a bed of old bear fur to show who once lived there. My lunch eaten, I stowed the remains in my backpack, stood up, and continued on my way.

Travel wasn’t exactly easy. The trees grew pretty dense, but what made it worse was the uneven, rocky ground. At any time, I ran the risk of tripping over a root, or twisting my ankle on a loose rock. The dead autumn leaves that had recently been uncovered in the spring thaw crunched under my boots as I walked, but I tried to remain aware of the other sounds around me. Mostly, I heard birds. They were everywhere, their chirping and cawing creating a pleasant background to my plodding feet. Occasionally I would hear a light scurrying in the leaves to one side, and I’d glance to see a squirrel or a chipmunk. They watched me as I walked by, but they showed no fear. People typically don’t go after the likes of them, and they know they’re faster than me.

And so the day passed until I noticed a slight dimming in the sky. Looking up, the sky still spread clear blue above the treetops. I looked at my watch, and it read four thirty-two. I had been walking longer than I had expected. I paused and looked around to get my bearings and saw that the trees thinned out off to my left. There was some kind of clearing over there. “Well, I’ll be,” I thought as I studied my surroundings. “I’m in uncharted territory.” Never being one to resist my curiosity, I crept over to the clearing and, kneeling down, I peered through the brush.

The clearing was about a hundred feet wide, and almost that deep. The sun shown down on dead leaves, branches, logs, and the occasional rock. There was no sign of recent activity here. But what drew my attention was the log cabin standing in the exact center of the clearing. It was old, real old, but it looked solidly built. It was plain looking, and quite weathered. My guess was that it was at least fifty years old, but could be older. The door was on this side of the house and was closed. The single window to the left of the door was covered by some kind of wooden covering or hatch on the inside of the building. As I said, there was no sign of recent activity, including no trail leading to the door. It honestly looked like no one had been here in at least ten years!

I’m rarely careful when I’m exploring, and this was no exception. Besides, what danger could there be? There is no sign that any people have been here in ages, and bears don’t close doors behind them. So, I walked right up to the door. A quick examination showed that it was solidly built and still sturdy. I pushed on it, but it didn’t budge. It felt like it was just stuck, so I pushed hard on it and this time it did budge, but only a little. I stepped back from the door, took a deep breath, and threw myself against it as hard as I could. With a crash, the door swung open and I hurtled headlong into the building. I stumbled in, tripped on something and fell. The door swung hard, struck the wall and swung back, almost closing again. I lay for a moment sprawled on the floor of a cabin that had not been occupied in decades, and it was pitch dark.

Well, here I am! It's already Wednesday, and I'm still wound up from TotalCon. I ran six events! That's a lot. I was crashing in the last slot, but that wasn't bad since the players were too. Still, we ended up getting a second wind and had a great game.

All in all, it was a good con. I like location (except for the distance from home), and it was very well organized for the most part. Of course, they did get a bit blindsided when the hotel stole a bunch of their tables for brunch. Still, we recovered, and it didn't cause me any trouble.

Anyway, I'm here and I'm just chillin'. It's kind of nice to just hang out; I keep myself too busy.
