Chronicle 001: Xenomorph Invasion update
Posted On 11/17/2008 09:20:57
Well it is coming close to the time to send this new book to print. Mike Pondsmith liked this version much better than the first, telling me it read like a military game and less like a giant robot game. Looking back at the content and I am pretty amazed. Instead of 3 Xmorph types I have 13 types. I have new mechs, new art and loads of generics. I took John and TJ's packages and trimmed them down a bit and make them into tiers for the Fuzion Bloks system. The game has true military grit, including language. In the back of the book there is a Cyberpunk v3 Flashpack blurb. You can acutally use the Flaskpack to create some smoking original Xmorphs. Not to mention that Chronicle and CPv3 are pretty compatible. I've even included a timeline.

The PDF price is pretty steep at $10.00. But for over 200 pages that's not bad. The print book will price out at $16.00.

Chronicle 001 will be a core rule book for a whole other series of games I will be picking away at over the next 10 years.

The first person to hit me with a private message will get a copy of the PDF for free.

Xandoria Revival: Need some input
Posted On 10/31/2008 14:58:03
Does this rule make sense?

Advanced SkillsXandoria has a variety of weapons that require different skills in order to use them. All non-classed characters use their COMBAT skill for basic weapons. But if a player takes to a weapon they may train on it for special bonuses. For every 5 levels of a specialized weapon skill, the player gains a +1 to their Attack Damage when using that weapon. This same rule works for academic skills. You could specialize your SMARTS if you wanted a Healing skill. If a player chooses to specialize in a skill, they must use it. If a player uses a skill they need to keep track. When the player levels up, they then take the number of times they used a skill and subtract 10 from it. This is the level of the skill. As the player levels up, they will continue this process and add whatever is left over after ten to the specialty skill level. Example: Lee is a fan of the sword. His base Combat is 20 and his AGI is 15. His Action Limit when using a sword is 35. In combat he needs to roll under a 35 to hit with the weapon. With his Combat skill at 20, he subtracts 20 from his roll. Lee would like to do fancy tricks with a sword, so he specializes in it by learning the sword skill. Lee uses his sword 14 times and goes up a level. His new specialty Sword Skill is now level 4. The next time around he uses his sword 24 times. He will now add 14 to his Sword Skill bringing it up to level 18.

I have been bombshelled by my former college
Posted On 10/27/2008 21:17:05
So with times getting tight I put in an application at my former college where I graduated from. I was applying to tutor for writers. The response by e-mail was a bombshell. Summed up this person wrote this:
Now that I've had a chance to review them, I don't think that you're a good fit as a writing center tutor at this time.  To be quite honest and blunt, your cover letter contains a number of comma errors and is poorly organized, and your resume needs more parallel verb constructions.

My wife and I went over my cover letter and found one possible spot where a comma might go, but it was a toss up. And parallel verb constructions? Man I feel stupid. I guess I should feel blessed. The last person who bombed me like this got fired....

So where do I go from here? Nowhere. I'll keep teaching those working class students and forget about trying to go back to academic intellectualism that my old college is known for. But I still feel stupid. It was just a reminder of how I am not as smart as my fellow graduates.

At least I have my art and game design.............. Argh!

Anyone tried out Basic V? (Dusting off an old system for an idea)

A few years back I designed Basic V, a Video Game emulator for RPGs. I was curious if anyone had ever seen or used this before? Looking at it now, it has a slight Dark Heresy rule type to it. Makes me think....again....lol

Guardian Universe: 20 Years and still going!
Posted On 10/07/2008 07:19:33

Over 20 years ago I was playing classic Marvel. Loved it! But after the saturation of Marvel and the slow down in product support I started creating the GU setting. Characters like UK Man and Enforcer fought villains like the Reaper. But Marvel wasn't working for the setting. GU was about low level heroes. A few years later I picked up Heroes Unlimited. While I couldn't make much sense of the system, I just tweeked it and shazaam! A house system much like the current version of TBS.

Imagine it's 1975. No one has ever had powers before. Then one day "BAM" God finds himself on Earth with no memory of who he is (due to a cosmic imbalance). He finds himself in Japan, caught between the Yakazu and a rival ninja clan. God wipes out the rival clan and teleports away with the dead bodies. This event triggers the 'power' gene. Anyone who ever could have had potential for superhuman abilities now has them.

1985...Cartel (God) emerges as the president of Kryton Enterprises. With him comes the first superhuman crimes. The United Kingdom forms the UK Guardians. Then the United States. Then Russia. 3 rocking teams, each with dark histories. The small, but awesome superhuman war has begun.

1992....Even more superhumans emerge. Cartel thickens his ranks, telling anyone with powers to join him or die (which is how he filled his ranks in 1985). Some of the old Guardians are now dead, killed in the last great battle of the 1985 story arc. The newer members are inexperienced and lacking the battle readiness that the prior military Guardians had.

1999/2000... Quasi-Frodo comes onto the scene as do an army of angels seeking out Cartel. The epic story arc ends with Cartel being killed (God returns to the heavens) and a load of people lose their powers. (GU Core Fuzion Game).

Within each of these story arcs there is depth and drama. But that's what made the setting work so well. As I continued on I wanted to bridge classic Marvel style to the game. GU2.

Fists of Steel: Cartel is gone and Martial Arts heroes step up to protect humanity from everything else that is uncanny and out to conquer Earth. Tech heroes line up to help. In the end, Guan Di (Patron god of Police) uses the Dragonfire to alter reality creating two universes: GU2 and GU Core Fuzion.

GU2: Evolutionaries are growing in numbers. Guardians are public heroes and people fear the change. This setting is the hardcore Marvel style I wanted. And it's still growing.

GU Covert Strike Team (Coming Soon): Curious to see what has been happening on the Core Fuzion world? What really happened to all those heroes? The Angels? Kryton Enterprises? Those answers are all here.

So what things have people said were strong points to the GU setting?
-Extreme detail about NPCs.
-Zombi Ninja
-Loads of Zombi
-God as the bad guy
-Loads of guns
-The ability to cry when your character dies or their family dies
-Price.

For more info on the game settings:

If anything I want this blog to inspire. You don't need to go out and buy the game. Let's talk about your longest running campaign setting, something you created.

Disrespectful Students.....urgh...
Posted On 09/23/2008 07:00:33

As some of you know I teach at the college level. I'm known for my laid back classes and energized atmosphere. But last night I got pushed a little too far. Last week I had students complaining about needing a smoke break. They already had one break and is not practical to have 2 breaks for a 2 hour class. A student tells me "We pay you to teach us." Here's the thing, the class they are in is one of those fundemental 90 level classes. Ones where they HAVE to take it because they aren't up to speed to take regular classes yet. I told them that if they walk out during class then it's their own fault if they fall behind.

So last night some students get up in my face about needing a smoke break 30 minutes before class ends. I told them no, and those select students still got up and walked out. The line has been crossed.

This morning I get up and check my e-mail. I get this message from a student who didn't come to class last week and was mad because I didn't answer her e-mail the way she wanted. All she needed to do is actually open her book for the answers she was seeking. Not to mention she was in the class before that when I explained the assignment in detail.

The next phase of classes this week is going to get a wake-up call. My question to my peers here is: How would you handle these situations?

Dilly Green Bean Games 'Farm Hands' program....input
Posted On 09/13/2008 22:05:06
Because I am a big fan of RPGbomb I will post this here (because I'd rather have decent people working for me than the regular mainstream crews).

My company, Dilly Green Bean Games, is getting ready to roll out our Farm Hands program. This is a Promotion/Demo team that will travel to their local cons as offical reps of DGBG and run select games. All Farm Hands will recieve free games based on what they want to run. I am also considering doing special shirts for those people that sign on. The program will start with the basic 1 free book and support material. For each game store you run an event at we will throw in additional material (or convention) for the next event you run. This way people aren't getting freebies and then taking off.

So my questions posed here are:
Is the program concept decent?
How many of you would be interested in this program?
What else could I add to it?

Like I said, I really like RPGbomb and would prefer to pull people from this site for the Farm Hands program.

Atom Smasher....End of World?

Now here is my issue. Stephen Hawkings, brilliant mind and perv tell scientists that this machine won't destroy our planet. Here is a guy who has been confined to a wheelchair for his entire life and been the butt of people's bad jokes, and we are supposed to trust him? How do we know he isn't out to kill us all with a black hole weapon?

Craziness aside, this project is sketchy. We just don't know what could happen. If anything this is comparable to Doc Oc in Spiderman 2. On the other hand this could get us further in the universe.....

God I love and hate science. SO much to learn and so much to destroy us if we screw up....

Phantasy Star 32 bit and the new tribute game
Posted On 09/06/2008 18:51:41
This week Mike Pondsmith approved my 300 page Phantasy Star tribute RPG: Xandoria Saga Collection.
http://www.dillygreenbeangames.com/XandoriaSaga.html

I was pretty excited. This book has had so much bad luck that I was glad the new edition got finished without me dying. Originally Xandoria was called "Andoria" and it used the D6 system. I had written it for an unnamed RPG company that was pretty new at the time. After working really hard on the game the publisher started dropping excuse after excuse as to why all the work I had been doing for them wasn't getting used. He sat on Andoria and did nothing with it. I chalk this up to industrial competition. Oh well. A year later and the book hadn't gone anywhere. So I pulled the book from the publisher because they defaulted on their contract. So, I needed a new system so I grabbed the Action! System from Gold Rush Games. I worked hard to finish the game up and got ready to take it to the next level. But dealing with the old school Fuzion/GRG crew was like sitting there and getting spit on and still having to smile or else. Lucky for me, Mike Pondsmith saved me from that hell and I went Fuzion. So I hired a Manga artist to do the art for the book. It was all looking good. Then out of the blue this chick vanished and I had 1 whopping piece of art from her. Not cool. I ended up doing the art myself and that first core book sucked (Xandoria Core Fuzion).

I even put out Xandoria Gaiden 1-2 for The Basic System (which turned out more true to Phantasy Star than the Fuzion version).

So YEARS go by and I had forgotten about the cursed game. Then one day on RPGnet someone asks about a Phantasy Star RPG and someone actually mentioned Xandoria Gaiden!!!! I was jacked and begin redoing Xandoria. I pulled all the art, dumped the layout and come up with 250 pages of solid text! I then added the rest of my material that was thrown to one side to include Lost System, the Phantasy Star 1 tribute game! 300 pages! I spent over a year doing ALL the new art for Xandoria and I'll tell you I am stoked now. I even sat down and played Phantasy Star 4 the other day. Talk about brainstorming a new book after this one!

I am happy to say this 300 page game will be $23.00 (you heard it here first)! $9.00s cheaper than the original. I would have gone cheaper, but I'd like to make more than a buck a copy. The more I sell the more follow-up books I can do. Unfortunetly I am not doing a PDF. The file is too big and to go and LoRes all the art would take another year and I have some cool stuff to finish this year. Next year I will be focusing on TBS Foundations.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Film...B
Posted On 08/27/2008 18:41:45
Today we took the kids to see the Clone Wars movie.

The Bads:
Ok, I am tired of Kiddie Wars already! Kiddy nicknames from the (thank god to die) new Padawan.
The quick story.....holy cow batman!
Baby Hut?
Warner Brothers? What happened to Fox?

The Good:
Epic battles that dwarf the actual movies!
Lightsaber battles that look cool!
LoRes versions of actual Star Wars cgi for the film (ships, clone troopers).
Did I say Epic Battles?

If you like SW then go see it. If you love the RPG, go see it and feel inspired!!

Richard Lee Byers.....go back to school please
Posted On 08/26/2008 17:33:18
I rarely get to pick up a good book these days. I did land myself a copy of Undead (Forgotten Realms) dirt cheap at a local Waldens.

So yesterday at the beach I started to read this D&D novel. So the story was pretty cool. BUT then came the word use issues. Seriously....this guy reminds me of the game designer who I was so blessed to have gone to college with who told our professor that "I don't need college, I'm going to write RPGs." Within 2 pages, Mr. Byers uses the word "Dived" instead of "dove." I can't imagine what is coming next.

This seems to be a trend. Poor editing. Now I am not perfect (all one needs to do is pick up one of my games to see an error here and there), but this book is put out by a big name publishing house. So where the heck is their quality control. I don't feel so stupid these days because I tend to have less mistakes than Wizards of the Coast......

How many other authors out there that are just as bad? Speak up!!!!!

Final Conclusion: Robotech stinks, Classic Macross rules!
Posted On 08/22/2008 20:21:02
After a long Summer of Robotech: Macross Saga with my kids I thought it would be cool to show them the Macross movie. Now I have seen the original uncut version on a big screen TV back when I was a teen. The copy I have is the Clash of the Bionoids version, which is the extremely cut story.

My kids spoke: Dad, I like Macross much better than Robotech. I have to agree. The animation is better, the story is better and the music is a heck of a lot better. What was I thinking? I used to be big into Robotech as a kid and even kept up the fandom of the series recently, but Macross blows it away. Add that to Macross II: Lovers Again and you have a kick-butt series to run games from.

Besides the music being better, the whole Veritech Fighter, Veritech Tank and Alpha and Beta Fighter thing just kills me. I mean, come on! They would have been better off taking Megazone 23 and Mesopeda (sp) to make Robotech. At least Macross has consistancy. For now.

So this is what happens when you hand out freebies at a convention

I'm glad I check my name on Google and Yahoo every now and then:

Selling licenced art....illegally.....without my permission....

I like being a cult celeb, but come on! So not cool for fans and for Games Workshop.

Thoughts?

Thankyou OGC! Always a good time! (Now go out and buy GU2)
Posted On 07/27/2008 18:17:00
Once again I had a good time at OGC. We got to run GU2 and Xenomorph Invasion. While we had 1 convention goer at our table for the demo, I did have a friend of mine who hasn't played my games and my wife who doesn't game, all sitting with me. We all played GU2 and had a blast! One new fan at a time is all I need and we got one! It was nice to see the new XI worked good too. I even came home and quickly adjusted some text to make it easier!

As always it was good to see my mentor, Blix!

Big thank you to Lisa and her staff! Thank you! A hug is worth a million bucks, Lisa! As always you make me feel rich!

Woulda been nice to actually see John more......Geesh...almost as bad as Dregg at the old ICONs....lol

Also, a big hug out to the TotalCon gal who looked like she was a deer in the headlights when I said hi to her. I can tell we'll have an awesome time at TotalCon in Feb!

I'll be back next year! Hopefully I will be able to actually stay the weekend instead of this stupid 5 hour visit! Damn nature!!!

Rescued: Classic RPG Books from Dumpster...lol
Posted On 07/21/2008 01:17:56
My step brother got me into gaming when I was a kid. He had lots of books, but until today I didn't realize how many. So I am sitting at a cook-out and my sister-in-law brags about how she dumped his entire RPG book collection into a dumpster! I was peeved. I told my brother I would buy his collection when the time came, but he threw them out. Luckily, I knew where this dumpster was (in his step dad's yard) and drove 45 minutes away to get into it. My wife and I arrive and there is the box, but I couldn't reach it!! So my wife jumps in (maggots to one side and a gross smell) and retrieves the box!!! None of the books had anything on them!

So I get home and quickly lay the books out.......he had classics.

AD&D 1st edition books!
D&D 1st edition books and mods!
Indiana Jones RPG!
Car Wars
Block Busters!
Star Frontier books!
Cyber Space RPG!
Shadowrun books!
Gamma World 1st edition!

Most of the books were in fair condition, but very usable. Talk about an addition to my RPG library. I do have some doubles like Fiend Folio and Unearthed Arcana.

I am really surprised my wife did it......... She'll be at OGC with me. I told her she's a geek hero....lol

My Memoir....goes into production
Posted On 07/09/2008 07:09:39

So ever wonder what made Jay the guy he is today? Well I wrote a book about it in Grad school. One word: Cancer. The guy who writes and does all his own art is the sole survivor of a research study at the National Institute of Health. 90+ people dead, and here I am still standing (or propped up).

Anyways, as part of my theropy I wrote this book and now I am going to publish the damn thing. It bares all of my darkest thoughts and my most sinful actions as a sailor who was told he was going to die. So get ready.....my reality is about to hit your book shelves in the near future...................lol

Cyberpunk 203X as a college teaching tool.
Posted On 07/07/2008 13:20:06

I am currently teaching Intro to Management for the local college. Today we were discussing Internet security, data analysis and server storage. I used CP 203X's backstory about the data crash to make some points about playing it safe. Students asked about storing data on flashdrives and floppy disks, but I made the point that magnetic sources could kill them. They suggested paper or server storage SHAZAAM! CPv3!

Good stuff indeed. Before you know it Mike will be hailed as a visionary by my students.
