Political posts will no longer be allowed on RPGBOMB
Posted On 09/21/2008 19:37:42

After a discussion at today business meeting it has been decided that posts of a political nature will not be allowed on RPGBOMB. We do not feel that anyone has done anything wrong. We find that politics polarizes people and can make for an unfriendly environment. Most people come to our site to escape the constant prattle of the real world and it is our opinion that these political posts drives some people away. RPGBOMB has become a great community site where everyone seems to get along. At least it is that way so far. It is our strong desire to keep it that way.

Thank you,

Staff

My 3 & 4 year old girls learn to play Castles & Crusades
Posted On 09/16/2008 12:25:30
Last night I played Castles & Crusades with my two little girls and my wife. My wife is really not into RPG’s but my girls kept bugging her to play. This is my girls third time role playing the first two times we played a light version of AD&D. This was also the first time we played with character sheets a map and figs. They loved the figs and it really helped hold their attention.

We first got the important stuff out of the way. Both my girls wanted to be sure their characters had purple swords, purple armor, and purple capes. One does not go adventuring unless they are properly dressed and colors coordinated. When they were satisfied I was told I could begin the adventure.

The adventure went something like this:

Me – OK girls you are on the road headed to a village where all the people have gone missing. It is your job to find out what happened to them and rescue them. As you travel down the road you suddenly find 4 goblins blocking your way. They look like they are about to attack you. Goblins are evil short green creatures that hate people. What do you do?

Wife – well girls I say we try and ride around them

4 year old – dady I run them over with my horse !

Wife – (slack jawed and surprised)

Me – (big BACK-SIDE smile of pride)

4 year old – (runs down and kills to goblins)

3 year old – dady I shoot them with my bow ( 3 year old kills two goblins)

The game continued like this for an hour then it was time for bed. I went to bed very happy knowing my girls are gamers.  Damn good ones too.

Looking for chat room moderators
Posted On 09/15/2008 23:13:54

I have been getting a lot of requests to direct people to the chat room. You all just keep missing each other. We are looking for some volunteers to hang out in the chat room and moderate as well. Moderators will be given moderating rights and the ability to boot and ban people if necessary. Although this has never been necessary before. Seven people will be chosen, the commitment is only one night a week for 4 hours 8 PM – 12 AM. If you are interested please email webmaster@rpgbomb.com.

I had to kill the music link
Posted On 08/28/2008 17:17:55
Posting music is just as illegal as downloading it. Sorry guys but I killed the link. It is one of the least used links on the site anyways. There are ways of legally posting Music on your profile. If you really need music on your profile I suggest useing them. thanks for your understanding.

Frank Mentzer interview has been posted.

Look for the next part of Frank’s interview soon.

The Following is from Wikipedia:

Mentzer was an employee at TSR, Inc. in the early stages of the company from 1980 to 1986. In 1981 he founded the Role-Playing Games Association (RPGA). Among other positions he held at TSR, he was Creative Advisor to the Chairman of the Board, Gary Gygax.

Mentzer's D&D-related publications include:

  • The 1983 boxed sets of revised core rules for Dungeons & Dragons, Basic Rules Set 1 (red box) and Expert Rules Set 2 (blue box), along with their sequels Companion Rules (1984), Master Rules (1985), and Immortals Rules (1986). See the Editions of Dungeons & Dragons article for details on these boxed sets.
  • Adventure module T1-4 The Temple of Elemental Evil, co-authored with Gygax in 1985
  • Accessory module AC4 - The Book of Marvelous Magic (TSR, 1985), also co-authored with Gygax.
  • The entire RPGA series of adventures based on Mentzer's own home "Aquaria" D&D campaign, coded R1 through R10. The R series of adventures was originally intended to form the basis of a new "Aqua-Oerdian" boxed set to expand upon the World of Greyhawk campaign setting, but these plans were shelved after Gygax left TSR in 1985.
  • Module I-11, Needle (TSR, 1987).
  • Module I-12, Egg of the Phoenix with Paul Jacquays (TSR 1989), a revised compilation of R1 - R4.
  • Module IM-1, The Immortal Storm (TSR, 1986).

New site feature will be installed tonight 8/25/08
Posted On 08/25/2008 21:49:12

Within the hour a new feature will be installed on the top bar of the site. Do not panic if the top bar acts funky. Just refresh your page by hitting ctrl F5 and it should go away. If the funky stuff does not go away just wait a few moments while we finish the install and try again. Keep watching, this feature is small but very cool and useful.

The future of RPGBOMB is bright!
Posted On 08/24/2008 23:46:58

We cannot help but thank our members and visitors for the awesome turnout our site has received. In the last thirty days we have moved from a wannabe site to the site everyone wants to be. We have been contacted by other websites who wish to have their own RPG social site (and will soon) and asked to join with them. We of course respectfully declined. There is another social networking site out there (not a pen and paper RPG site) that looks almost exactly like us; colors, layout, and more. If it wasn't for their logo you might think you were on RPGBOMB. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I hope so.

It is really you, the members, who have made this site what it is. Back when we were but a skeletal, emaciated shadow of what we are now, many of you took a chance and help us build this site. I'd like to say it's been a long road but the site only came on line in February of this year and we just went live last May. I can't say that it hasn't been hard though. Many of us have been working late and long hours to get this site working the way you see it now. None of us would have put this effort in if we didn't know you believed in this site.

So what does the future hold? I wish I could tell you all the things going on behind the scenes. Our competition would be devastated (emotionally) if they knew. I think the next few weeks will be enlightening, the next few months very telling. If all goes right, this week you should start to see some unique content produced by RPGBOMB. We are also in talks with a handful of companies that could result in strategic partnerships that will provide our members with new content and features. I really wish I could say more but I just can't put the cart in front of the horse.

Now is the time to be a part of RPGBOMB. It is our hope that some day you can tell your friends that you were a part of the BOMB before it hit the big time. No one can say how long that will take but it sure feels good to know so many people are taking notice of us. Really, they have taken notice of you, our members. When I was at Gen-Con last week, all I heard from people was how cool our members were; no one complaining or fighting. Yes people disagreed, but it's not like some sites where people really go at each other. We have become a community of gamers who get along and I hope it stays that way. People have taken notice and, as you will see in the coming weeks, our community has attracted some big names in the industry.

Keep posting, people are listening to what you have to say. Keep inviting new people to join RPGBOMB. The site is a better place for all of us when more people contribute. Most of all keep watching. The site will keep changing. There is a lot more to come. Thank you for making this site great.

What is Blue Dragon?
Posted On 08/15/2008 11:26:06

What is Blue Dragon?

While at Gen Con I stumbled onto a new card game called Blue Dragon. Its target age is 8 to 11 year olds but I found it to be a lot of fun for as old people as well. In fact most of the people who were playing the demo were between 15 and 25.

I have to admit the game flowed well and was easy to learn. It is both options rich and dynamic. In this card game you gain experience (from cards you have used) to level up, effectively enhancing your attack capabilities. You can call allies from your hand that can both attack and defend for you and most have their own cool abilities as well. There is a host of none creature cards that allow players to enhance, block, and negate attacks.

Blue Dragon is based off of a Japanese cartoon called, you guessed it Blue Dragon. The series had a short run on the cartoon network. I have to admit I liked this game and I really don’t like similar card games. I’m going to take this home and run it by my QA people who just happen to be my four and half year old and three and a half year old daughters. My youngest one is the art critic and the older one does system and game mechanic analysis; she let me know if they have their math right.

This game is produced by konami and will be released in November of this year.

Chasing that Cherry High!
Posted On 08/10/2008 20:16:08

I want to officially thank my players for schooling my BACK-SIDE this Friday. Really there are too many characters. I should just up the monsters and kick their asses. Truthfuly I am challenging them its just that their tactics are sound.

If you have ever wondered why publisher come out with new editions here is one reason. Granted making more money is still their real motivation (something I have absolutely no issue with). It’s true; systems can get boring especially at lower levels. In rules heavy systems there are only so many possible choices and outcomes. In rules light system the possibilities can be almost infinite.

When you look at games like AD&D and Castles & Crusades you really make a lot of stuff up as you go. With a good GM the world and system can stay rich and fresh almost all the time. That’s the pay off though. A common and rich rules system cuts down on arguing and if you know the system you can really take advantage of it (power gaming). In a rules light system you have to be prepared for anything and accept the knocks as they come even if you don’t like it. There is a lot more trust, surprises and fun in a rules light system. You cannot rely on the scaffolding of a system when making your decisions if the rules are light. There is no Meta gaming as we have come to understand it. Your only reference for the world around you is the one you experience in every day life. That means anything can happen at any time and your knowledge of the rules is not going to save you.

I’ve been chatting with a fellow in the forums about game systems (Killer DM’s forum). He told me the best games he ever played was a game where there were almost no rules and no character sheets. They used rocks paper scissors to determine the outcome of all challenged and conflicts. I agree, I have play games like this too and they really suck you in. Granted it takes an amazing GM to pull it off and if you have a GM like that you are truly blessed.

My group has my number. I like crunchy rules heavy systems. The problem is they produce consistent reliable and predictable outcomes. Learn the system and you can’t help but meta-game. There is no spontaneity or surprises. No uniqueness and eventually no fun. Like magic the gathering, it was great when it was new. After a while the only people playing it are people new to the game and those filled with nostalgia chasing that cherry high they got the first time they played.

If you would like to comment on the new look please do. Go to the forum area and tell us what you think.
