My 3 & 4 year old girls learn to play Castles & Crusades
Posted On: 09/16/2008 12:25:30
Last night I played Castles & Crusades with my two little girls and my wife. My wife is really not into RPG’s but my girls kept bugging her to play. This is my girls third time role playing the first two times we played a light version of AD&D. This was also the first time we played with character sheets a map and figs. They loved the figs and it really helped hold their attention.

We first got the important stuff out of the way. Both my girls wanted to be sure their characters had purple swords, purple armor, and purple capes. One does not go adventuring unless they are properly dressed and colors coordinated. When they were satisfied I was told I could begin the adventure.

The adventure went something like this:

Me – OK girls you are on the road headed to a village where all the people have gone missing. It is your job to find out what happened to them and rescue them. As you travel down the road you suddenly find 4 goblins blocking your way. They look like they are about to attack you. Goblins are evil short green creatures that hate people. What do you do?

Wife – well girls I say we try and ride around them

4 year old – dady I run them over with my horse !

Wife – (slack jawed and surprised)

Me – (big BACK-SIDE smile of pride)

4 year old – (runs down and kills to goblins)

3 year old – dady I shoot them with my bow ( 3 year old kills two goblins)

The game continued like this for an hour then it was time for bed. I went to bed very happy knowing my girls are gamers.  Damn good ones too.

That's awesome!  I've just gotten my 9 year old neice into Zombies!  She loves that game.  I've been getting her into card games, and things like that.  But Zombies, is the first big step towards RPG's.  I think in another year or two she might be ready for some good old fashoined D&D.

Wonderful story. I love seeing wha tthe kids come up with. My now 9-yr old is always good for a good plan and my 5 yr old is always good for a goofy reaction in gaming.

We play "Tales from the Wood" and my oldest came up with a cool plan to save their squirrel friend by having her mole dig a tunnel under the intervening rats and weasels while being guided through coded foot stomps by a hare that was keeping the vermin busy.

kids are the best roleplayers, becuase they understand the comcept of make belive very well.

My girls love it they have been asking to play for a year. They see me go out to my game very Friday and always want to come and play with me.

Ah, you have furthered the species. Gamers are brought into a new generation.

Reminds me of when I was little and I sat on my daddy's lap every evening and played Doom with him until bedtime. Oh, happy memories.
