What makes a good Gming chapter?

I know a lot of times I've skimmed over such chapters giving me advice, and so when I sit down to write another one, I keep thinking that I'm gilding the lily so to speak. In essence adding to much thought, or too much common sense.

Yet, at the same time if I don't cover what a GM does in explicit detail, what will be left out? Where will a GM need support when things go wrong?

As a not-so-experienced GM, I like the nuts and bolts explanations of creating an adventure out of my imagination. Lots of step-by-step, but also really useful shortcuts. How much time might it take on average (and then add some extra for the newbie) to actually do some of this stuff? I'd like to know that it's ok to spend 45 minutes on one part and 45 seconds on something else.

Identifying the bare bones items: You cannot run this game without at least the following stuff (in front of you, on the table, prepared, etc.). And this is the same stuff for everyone regardless of experience level. So if I were to visit 50 different groups running the same game, I'd find the same 5 or 6 things in front of the GM. This is important to me. I want to know that if I don't have this, my players' game experience will suffer.

I agree with Ermintrude. I like the descriptions of game play. I want to know how something might look in action.

I've read lots of GMing chapters and I always enjoy them.  I always find it interesting to hear other people's ideas and thoughts.

When I was first starting out I always found examples of game play very interesting and helpful, particularly the narative of a few minutes of the game, whth the players and GM talking, sometimes in character, sometimes asking or answering questions.  I'm not talking about the rules examples, saying 'roll on table 2.7', I mean the sort of thing that goes along the lines of 'the GM rolls some dice and says "the air begins to smell of ozone and a red glow begins to come from behind the door".  Gary asks "can I hear anything?"....
