The date will be 9/9/9. Don't forget that when your eyes see an image it is actually inverted and it is your brain that corrects the image. Your eyes are actually seeing 6/6/6.

As stated in my previous blog my group played a one-shot at our FLGS last weekend. When I arrived I immediately noticed that every regular gaming table was taken up by Magic the Gathering players. Looks like they were having a tournament or something. I was a little ticked because when I called the game shop earlier in the day I asked if I needed to reserve a table and they assured me that I wouldn't have a problem. So... we ended up using one of the wargame tables. On two of the other wargame tables there were some Warhammer 40K players quietly going about their game. I was running a one shot World of Darkness game for my group. Now, IMNSHO gaming at a FLGS should be something akin to playing at the library. You keep your voices down out of respect for the other games being run at the tables next to you. The occasional huzzah from rolling a "Nat 20" is fine so long as quiet is the norm. If it had been just my group and the two Warhammer 40K groups everything would have been hunky-dory. The MtG tourney almost ruined it all for me. For one they were just generally loud to begin with. The event coordinator evidently felt that we were the interlopers because every so often he'd walk around the room yelling at the top of his lungs that some form had to be turned in to him before the end of the night or some other BS. He seriously seemed to enjoy the power that he appeared to wield over the MtG players. Every time he'd walk by our table yelling something or other at the top of his lungs I had to seriously reign in the desire to deck the guy. In his mind no other game existed. I could tell from the nasty looks he was getting that several of the Warhammer 40K players felt the same way as I did. Please... when you game in a common room at the FLGS do NOT check your manners at the door. Be aware that there are other groups playing games that have nothing to do with your game of which they probably have no interest just as you probably aren't interested in theirs. Have fun but be respectful of others so that you can have the same expectation of them.

Last weekend for the first time in an age I was forced to game at my FLGS. My regular GM was out with family business and the rest of the group and I decided to get together and play a one-shot game in his absence. Since the GM normally hosts, we were forced to find an alternate venue which just so happened to end up being our FLGS.
I noticed something about that visit... gamers seem to emphasize their "Gamer Pride" when it comes to gaming at a place where gamers congregate in large numbers. They may appear to be the most ordinary people around during their day-to-day lives but when it's game night they will dress in ways that are meant to scream out "LOOK AT ME!!! I'M A GAMER!!!" Now, I also feel this need to a point... I have a Mage the Ascension t-shirt with a nice big pentagram on the back that might offend some people and I'll typically only wear it to gaming events (I wore it Saturday). That was nothing compared to the guy walking around in a red t-shirt, khaki kilt, black socks and Doc Martins. Looking around the common gaming room I saw the large number of people who were also dressed in a manner that sought to draw attention to the fact that they were gamers.
I realized that you normally see this kind of behavior among people who feel repressed. You see it at gay pride marches, civil rights rallies, etc. I realized that by choosing to wear my Mage shirt I was also going out of my way to draw attention to myself as a gamer... not so much because it looks all that great (it doesn't). Do we as a subculture feel repressed either subconsciously or consciously? Do you, the readers of this blog find yourself dressing in a way that proclaims your pride at being a gamer when you go to a game or con? Would you feel uncomfortable wearing the same clothes when you go to the grocery store? If so, why would you feel uncomfortable?
Do we need to start having Gamer Pride marches?

Garen Sylus tries to come across as the candidate for the people but nothing could be further from the truth. He speaks of the jobs he is losing at his brewery. OSHA has repeatedly cited Sylus for unsafe working conditions... his workers are leaving not because of the competition I pose but for fear of their own lives. More than one worker has drowned in the vats of Sylus. Sylus says that I make policy to favor Adventuring Parties but not the commoner. Nothing could be further from the truth. By making our town more attractive to Adventuring Parties I've slashed the budget expenditures on law enforcement. The peace is kept through a mutually beneficial mercenary agreement with the adventuring groups that they can keep whatever loot they find on a law breaker. They then turn around and toast to their victory at our inns. True, I'm a businessman and do whatever I can to attract business but then I turn around and donate a large portion of my profits to religious charitable organizations which pay for orphanages and give aid to the needy.
Garen Sylus is a wannabe dwarf... his accent is faked and his beard is pasted on. Next time you see him, give it a hard tug. He's more halfling than dwarf.

Just what we need, a modern day version of Mazes & Monsters only this time it is MMORPG games that are going to be the bad guy. I am so sick of the fact that we as a culture MUST externalize our problems... there can't possibly be something wrong with me so therefore it MUST be something else. If a guy get so addicted to World of Warcraft that he quits going in to work then there isn't a problem with the game, there is a problem with the guy and his ability to prioritize the things that are important in his life. If he skips work and gets fired he can't pay the rent, pay for the car, or put food on the table. I'm sorry, I don't buy the whole "Gambling is an addiction" idea. If that is the case then anything that makes you happy can be an addiction. Going to movies can be an addiction... going bowling can be an addiction... heck, if it is your thing then collecting stamps could be an addiction. I get the buzz of elation when I win an auction on eBay and get to buy something for a really great price. Does that mean I am addicted? I play Dawn of War every chance I get because I love the elation of winning a hard fought battle... does that mean I am addicted? I don't skip work to play it but if I take a "Mental Health Day" of time off then you can bet that I'll play it.
Sorry for the rant... I'm just tired of people blaming their problems on everything besides themselves.
I think there should be a separate "Recent Forum Topics" section for PBP games. I don't play PBP games so any other forum topics that might be of interest to me are "pushed off" the list by all of the PBP game updates.
With the season of haunting upon us my memories always go back to what, in my humble opinion, is the best haunted house in the world... bar none. When I graduated high school I started working at Haunted Verdun Manor every Halloween and did that for several seasons. I introduced my best friend to it and he has worked there every season for the past 17 years. The owner, the late Lance Pope, was an effects genius. The vast majority of the costumes and masks he made himself. Instead of tearing it down after every season, he kept what he had and spent all year improving on it. His dream was to create a haunted house theme park and he succeeded. If any of you find yourselves in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas area this Halloween season I HIGHLY suggest you check it out. I have no doubts that it will become the haunted house experience that you measure all others against (I know I do). http://www.thrillvania.com/

This is not a political blog... I just thought that this was a kinda neat video put together encouraging people to go vote no matter who you like. They ask that you send it to 5 people but I don't believe in chain letters so I figured that his was a great place to post it so several people would be able to see it. http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=5930083
