Ok, so I've sent out a bunch of campaign ideas to the players: short, 1 paragraph or less summaries of what the campaign would be centered around - what the characters would actually DO. I've gotten responses from the players about which ones they each personally like best. In the meantime of course I kept on creating new ideas...
One I'm partial to right now is the Strigany. The Strigany are the Warhammer world version of gypsies. Their homeland destroyed in the distant past by orc invasions, the Strigany wander the world, outcasts. Hated and feared by the denizens of the rest of the empire because of their linkage to the Strigoi - Vampires.
The players would be part of a moving caravan or river barge of Strigany making their way around the empire, trading at cities and ports of call. Stealing when necessary to survive or running games of chance. Even serving local potentates as sellswords to make a few coins. Strengths of this idea: A base of operations provided (the caravan), plenty of NPC's for plothooks (the caravan), easy to bring in new characters if a PC dies (the caravan), varied story potential depending on where the caravan is. Weakness of the idea: players may not like playing members of a despised culture.
Hmmm. Definately high on the possible list...

Ok. So, my last campaign, a White Wolf Mage game, imploded when I got the hint that my players wanted to play that new fangled 4e thing rather than Mage. Imagine that. Alright. I can deal. So now I'm busily at work trying to come up with a new campaign while another GM runs us through a 4e FR game. I think I've decided on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.(WFRP) My group definately has a fantasy genre bent so it's best to give them what they like. I'm toying with some 4e Greyhawk ideas also, but think they may be burnt out on 4e by the time my GM sprint comes around. I have a few months.
For those who don't know, WFRP, has a long pedigree having originally come out in 1984 and recently getting a new glitzy edition in 2005. I'll be running version 2. The game has a really simple, streamline percentile system at its core. Something I personally like - simple and percentile. Normally I like to build my own settings, but as I get older and have less time to work on things, using "canned" worlds and adventures has started to grow on me. Plus, the "Ok, here's how the world is" conversations with players are cut down when using a heavily supported setting like Warhammer or Greyawk. Easy to point players at a website and say: "This!"
Anyway, I'll post my rambling ideas for the campaign as they come up - and I remember to post. I love to hear from others, so if you have an idea or a comment, post away!
